Learn How to Build a Cigar Box Guitar

What Is a Cigar Box Guitar and Why Build One

A cigar box guitar is a stringed musical instrument made from a wooden cigar box as its body, combined with a wooden neck and metal strings. The cigar box serves as the resonating chamber that amplifies the vibrations of the strings, producing sound. This instrument has deep historical roots in American folk and blues music, dating back to the early 1900s when musicians in the American South created them out of necessity and resourcefulness.

Building a cigar box guitar yourself offers several practical advantages. The project requires minimal tools and materials compared to constructing a traditional guitar. Most cigar boxes cost between $3 and $15, and a complete build can be done for $30 to $100 depending on the quality of materials you choose. The construction process takes 8 to 15 hours spread across several days, making it a manageable weekend project or ongoing hobby.

The finished instrument produces authentic, warm tones that appeal to folk, blues, and alternative musicians. Because of its simple construction, a cigar box guitar produces a naturally distorted, bright sound that many musicians prefer for specific musical styles. The instrument gained renewed popularity in the early 2000s through the "cigar box guitar revival" movement, with musicians and builders worldwide sharing designs and techniques online.

Beyond the practical and musical benefits, building a cigar box guitar teaches fundamental principles about how acoustic instruments work. You learn directly about sound production, string tension, resonance, and wood acoustics through hands-on experience. This knowledge transfers to understanding how traditional guitars function.

Practical Takeaway: Before starting, listen to recordings of cigar box guitar music to understand the sound you're aiming for. Search for "cigar box guitar blues" or "three-string cigar box guitar" on music platforms to hear various playing styles and tonal qualities.

Gathering Materials and Tools You Will Need

The most critical material is the cigar box itself. Look for wooden boxes rather than cardboard ones—they produce better sound and last longer. Boxes measuring 8 by 6 inches work well for beginners. You can find these at tobacco shops, online retailers, or sometimes antique stores. The box condition matters less than its structural integrity; a worn-looking box often sounds better than a pristine new one because the wood has aged and become more resonant.

For the neck, a wooden dowel or a piece of hardwood like oak or maple works effectively. Most builders use a dowel measuring 24 to 28 inches long and 3/4 inch in diameter. Alternatively, you can purchase a pre-made guitar neck kit online for $15 to $40, which comes ready to install. For the headstock (the end where strings attach), you'll need a wooden block approximately 4 by 2 inches.

Strings are the most important sound-producing component. You have three main options: acoustic guitar strings, bronze wound strings, or specialized cigar box guitar strings sold online. Many builders use three strings rather than six on a traditional guitar, creating what's called a "three-string" cigar box guitar. Three strings are easier to tune and play for beginners. Cost ranges from $3 to $12 for a set.

Basic tools you'll need include a drill with bits, a saw, sandpaper in varying grits (80, 120, and 220), a pencil, a ruler or measuring tape, and screwdrioughs or nails. A soldering iron helps create secure electrical connections for any tuning machines, but it's not strictly necessary. Most importantly, you need a work surface like a workbench or sturdy table where you can safely operate tools.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of materials before shopping. Compare prices from music retailers, online marketplaces, and local suppliers. A complete materials list with estimated costs helps you budget and prevents unnecessary trips back to the store.

Understanding the Basic Structure and Design

A cigar box guitar consists of four main components: the body (the cigar box), the neck, the headstock, and the bridge. Understanding how these parts work together is essential before beginning construction. The body acts as a resonator—when strings vibrate, they transfer energy to the wooden box, which vibrates and amplifies that energy into audible sound. A solid, undamaged box produces clearer, louder sound than a cracked or warped one.

The neck is a straight wooden piece that extends from the body. This is where you press strings to change their pitch. The length and thickness of the neck affect how the instrument plays and feels in your hands. A longer neck (24 to 28 inches) gives you more room to create different notes and provides better playability. The neck should be straight—any warping or bending reduces playing quality significantly.

The headstock is attached to the top end of the neck and serves as the anchor point for strings. This is where tuning machines or pegs install. The headstock must be sturdy enough to handle string tension, which can exceed 100 pounds of force across all strings. Undersized or weak headstocks lead to breakage and tuning instability.

The bridge sits on top of the cigar box and serves two functions: it holds strings at the correct height above the box, and it transfers string vibrations to the box body. A properly positioned bridge typically sits about 1/4 inch above the box surface. The bridge height, called "action," affects how easy or difficult the instrument plays. Too low, and strings buzz against the box; too high, and the instrument becomes tiring to play.

Many builders use a "through-body" design where the neck passes through the cigar box and exits the other side. This design distributes vibrations more evenly and creates a sturdier instrument. Alternative designs mount the neck on top of or beside the box, each producing slightly different tonal characteristics.

Practical Takeaway: Sketch the design before cutting any materials. Measure your cigar box, plan where the neck will attach, and mark the position of the sound hole (if adding one). A simple pencil drawing helps visualize the finished product and prevents costly mistakes.

Step-by-Step Construction Process

Begin by preparing your workspace and materials. Clean your cigar box thoroughly and inspect it for damage. If you're adding a sound hole (optional but recommended for better acoustic projection), mark a circle 2 to 3 inches in diameter on the box surface. Use a hole saw or drill with a large bit to create this opening carefully—work slowly to avoid splintering the wood. Sound holes increase the instrument's volume by 20 to 30 percent.

Next, attach the neck to the box. If using a through-body design, drill a hole through both ends of the cigar box slightly smaller than your neck diameter. Slide the neck through and secure it with wood glue and screws on the outside of the box. The neck should be perfectly vertical or angled very slightly backward—this angle helps with string action and playability. Check alignment with a level before tightening any fasteners.

Attach the headstock to the top of the neck using wood glue and multiple screws or bolts. Drill holes for tuning machines on the headstock before final assembly if possible. This is easier than drilling after everything is assembled. Space tuning machine holes evenly across the headstock—typically 3/4 inch from the neck centerline for three-string guitars.

Install the bridge on top of the cigar box near the sound hole. The bridge can be a simple wooden block or a more elaborate design with string slots. Glue it firmly in place—it will experience significant force from string tension. The bridge position should be approximately 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down the box length, measured from the neck end. This positioning creates the correct string angle and sound characteristics.

Sand the entire instrument with progressively finer sandpaper grades. Start with 80-grit paper to remove rough spots and splinters, progress to 120-grit for smoothing, and finish with 220-grit for a polished appearance. Sanding not only improves aesthetics but also makes the instrument more comfortable to hold and play. Pay special attention to the neck, which your hands will contact frequently.

Apply a finish if desired. Many builders use clear polyurethane or linseed oil to protect the wood and enhance appearance. Avoid heavy finishes that would dampen the wood's vibration and reduce sound quality. A single or
