How to Make Rag Rugs From Old Fabric

Understanding Rag Rug Basics and Materials

Rag rugs are handmade floor coverings created by weaving or braiding strips of fabric together. This craft dates back centuries and remains popular today because it transforms worn clothing and fabric scraps into functional home décor. The beauty of making rag rugs lies in their versatility—you can create rugs of nearly any size, color combination, and texture based on the materials you have available.

The primary material you'll need is fabric scraps. Old t-shirts, jeans, bed linens, towels, flannel shirts, and cotton clothing work exceptionally well. Denim produces particularly durable rugs because of its thick weave, while jersey knit fabrics from t-shirts create soft, flexible rugs. Avoid using synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon when possible, as natural fibers like cotton and linen hold dyes better and wear more predictably over time. One study examining textile waste found that the average American discards about 81 pounds of textiles annually—much of which could be redirected into craft projects like rug making.

Before starting your project, gather fabric from your household first. Check closets, drawers, and storage areas for items you no longer wear. Damaged linens with small holes or stains work perfectly since you'll be cutting them into strips. Many people also ask friends and family members for unwanted clothing, or visit thrift stores where damaged items sell at reduced prices. A single rag rug measuring 3 feet by 5 feet typically requires between 15 and 25 pounds of fabric, depending on how tightly you weave or braid the strips.

Practical takeaway: Before purchasing any supplies, inventory the fabric already in your home. Most people have enough material for at least one practice rug without buying anything.

Preparing and Cutting Fabric Strips

Proper fabric preparation determines the quality and appearance of your finished rug. Start by sorting your collected fabric by color and weight. This organization makes the actual rug-making process smoother and helps you plan color patterns in advance. Wash all fabric before cutting to prevent future shrinkage and color bleeding. Use warm water and mild detergent, then dry completely. Pre-washing also removes dust and odors that may have accumulated in stored clothing.

Next, remove zippers, buttons, seams, and other hardware from garments. These elements are difficult to weave through and can snag or damage your rug. Cut away collars, cuffs, and hems as well, since these thick areas won't feed smoothly through weaving or braiding processes. Focus on the main fabric body of each garment or cloth piece.

Cut fabric into strips using one of two methods: the continuous strip method or the cut-and-tie method. For continuous strips, fold fabric into thirds lengthwise, then cut diagonally across the fold to create one long, continuous strip that measures approximately 1 to 1.5 inches wide. This method works beautifully for knit fabrics like t-shirt material, which has natural stretch and won't fray. For woven fabrics like cotton or linen, cut straight strips 1 to 2 inches wide and join them as you work by tying knots or sewing them together end-to-end.

The width of your strips affects the final rug texture. Thinner strips (1 inch) create more detailed patterns and tighter weaves, while wider strips (2 inches) produce bolder designs and work faster. Most rug makers choose strips between 1 and 1.5 inches wide as a good middle ground. Keep your strips organized by rolling them into balls or coiling them in containers sorted by color. This prevents tangling and keeps your workspace tidy.

Practical takeaway: Create a dedicated folding and cutting station near a window for natural light. A rotary cutter with a cutting mat speeds the process significantly compared to scissors.

Braided Rug Construction Method

Braiding is the most straightforward method for creating rag rugs and requires no special equipment beyond the fabric strips you've prepared. This technique produces sturdy, attractive rugs with a classic appearance. The braiding method works by creating long braids from fabric strips, then coiling and stitching them together to form a circular, oval, or rectangular rug shape.

Start by selecting three fabric strips of equal length—approximately 2 to 3 feet long works well for beginners. Knot these strips together at one end and anchor this knot to a fixed point, such as a doorknob, hook, or heavy piece of furniture. Braid the three strips together using the standard over-under-over technique: take the rightmost strip and cross it over the middle strip, then take the leftmost strip and cross it over the new middle strip. Repeat this motion, keeping tension even throughout. As you approach the end of your strips, add new strips by sewing or tying them to the ends of the original strips and continuing to braid.

Experienced rag rug makers can produce 10 to 15 feet of braid per hour. The length of braid you need depends on your target rug size. A 2-foot by 3-foot oval rug requires approximately 30 to 40 feet of braid, while a 4-foot by 6-foot rug needs 60 to 80 feet. Keep this in mind when planning your project timeline.

Once you have sufficient braid length, begin coiling it into your desired shape. For circular rugs, start with a small center coil and spiral outward. For oval or rectangular rugs, create an oval or straight center strip and continue coiling around it. Using a needle and heavy-duty thread or carpet yarn, stitch each coil layer to the layer beneath it using running stitches along the edges. This stitching must be secure; weak stitching causes the rug to unravel with use. Stitch through the fabric of each braid layer, catching multiple threads to ensure durability.

Practical takeaway: Practice your braiding technique with scrap fabric before committing to your actual rug project. Even 15 minutes of practice creates noticeably more even, consistent braids.

Weaving Method for Rag Rugs

Weaving produces rag rugs with flat surfaces and infinite design possibilities. While this method requires more equipment than braiding, it allows you to create complex patterns and geometric designs. The most accessible weaving approach for rag rug beginners involves using a simple cardboard loom or purchasing an affordable wooden frame loom from craft suppliers.

To create a cardboard loom, take a sturdy cardboard box or flat piece of corrugated cardboard larger than your intended rug size. Mark points along two opposite edges at regular intervals—typically half an inch to one inch apart, depending on your desired weave density. Cut notches at these marked points, then string heavy cotton cord or jute twine through the notches to create the warp (the vertical foundation threads). The warp threads should be pulled taut but not so tight they bend or compress the cardboard.

Once your warp is established, you're ready to weave. Thread your fabric strips through a large needle or weaving shuttle. Begin at one end and weave over and under the warp threads in an alternating pattern. When you reach the opposite edge, turn and weave back in the opposite direction, now going under where you previously went over. This creates the interlocking pattern that holds the rug together. Continue row by row until you've covered the entire loom width. Pack each new row down gently toward the previous rows using a fork, ruler, or purpose-made weaving tool to maintain even density.

Commercial floor looms and table looms offer more sophisticated weaving options for those interested in pursuing rug making as a serious hobby. These tools cost between $100 and $500 for basic models and allow weavers to create wider rugs with more complex patterns. However, cardboard loom rugs are entirely functional and beautiful, making them an economical choice for learning.

Color planning greatly enhances weaving results. Sketch your planned color arrangement on graph paper before beginning. Will you create stripes, checkerboard patterns, gradients, or random color placement? Having this plan prevents decision-making during the actual weaving process and produces more cohesive final results. Many weavers photograph successful color combinations for reference on future projects.
