Understanding Walmart's EV Charging Network

Walmart has become a significant player in the electric vehicle charging landscape across the United States. As of 2024, Walmart operates over 11,500 charging ports at more than 4,500 locations nationwide, making it one of the largest retail EV charging networks available to the public. This extensive infrastructure represents a major commitment to supporting EV adoption and providing convenient charging options for drivers.

The company's charging network includes two main types of chargers: Level 2 chargers and DC fast chargers. Level 2 chargers, also known as AC chargers, typically add 25-30 miles of range per hour of charging, making them suitable for longer shopping trips or overnight charging. DC fast chargers can add 200+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes, depending on the vehicle and charger specifications. Most Walmart locations feature Level 2 chargers, while DC fast chargers are available at select high-traffic locations.

Walmart's charging stations operate under the Walmart EV Charging banner and are strategically placed in parking lots near store entrances or in dedicated charging areas. The company partnered with ChargePoint, a leading EV charging network provider, to develop and manage much of this infrastructure. This partnership has allowed Walmart to rapidly expand its charging capabilities and integrate charging technology with its retail operations.

Understanding the scope and distribution of these chargers helps drivers plan routes and identify convenient charging locations during shopping trips or travel. The network continues to expand, with Walmart announcing plans to add more charging stations in coming years. Drivers can use various apps and online maps to locate Walmart charging stations, view real-time availability, and check charging speeds at specific locations.

Practical Takeaway: Start by visiting Walmart's official website or the ChargePoint app to see which charging stations are located near you. Note the charger types available at each location, as this determines how quickly your vehicle will charge during a typical shopping visit.

How to Find Walmart EV Charging Stations

Finding a Walmart charging station near you involves several straightforward methods. The most direct approach is to visit Walmart's official website, where they maintain a searchable map of all charging locations. Simply enter your city, state, or ZIP code, and the map displays nearby stations with details about charger types, number of ports, and real-time availability status.

The ChargePoint app and website offer another reliable option for locating Walmart chargers. ChargePoint maintains detailed information about all charging ports, including current availability, historical usage patterns, and user reviews. The app allows you to set up notifications when chargers become available at specific locations, which can be useful during peak shopping times.

Google Maps represents another practical tool for finding these stations. Enter "Walmart EV charging" or "EV charging near me" in Google Maps, and it will display available stations, including Walmart locations with chargers. The map shows directions, estimated travel time, and often includes user ratings and real-time availability information.

When searching for stations, consider these factors: your vehicle's charging speed (how quickly it accepts a charge), how long you typically shop at Walmart, and whether you need DC fast charging or Level 2 charging is sufficient for your needs. Some locations offer both types, while others feature only Level 2 chargers. Checking the specific station details before visiting prevents disappointment.

Many EV navigation systems, such as those built into Tesla, Chevrolet, and other vehicles, include information about charging networks and can automatically route you to Walmart chargers along your journey. These in-vehicle systems often show real-time availability and pricing information.

Practical Takeaway: Save the locations of at least three Walmart charging stations near your regular routes (home, work, shopping areas) in your phone's maps or charging app. This preparation makes it easier to add charging stops to your routine without searching each time.

Understanding Walmart EV Charging Costs and Pricing

Walmart's EV charging stations operate on a pay-per-use model through the ChargePoint network. Pricing varies by location and charger type, but understanding the cost structure helps you budget for charging expenses. As of 2024, Level 2 chargers at Walmart locations typically cost between $0.40 and $0.80 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while DC fast chargers generally range from $0.30 to $0.60 per minute or $0.40 to $1.00 per kWh, depending on location and demand.

Several factors influence the total cost of a charging session. The size of your vehicle's battery, current charge level, and how much you charge during each visit all affect the final price. For example, charging a 60 kWh battery from 10% to 80% on a Level 2 charger at $0.60 per kWh would cost approximately $28.80. The same battery charged using DC fast charging at $0.50 per minute for 25 minutes would cost around $12.50, illustrating the cost difference between charger types.

Payment for Walmart charging stations occurs through the ChargePoint app or website. You can set up a payment method, initiate a charging session directly through the app, and receive a receipt showing the duration, energy used, and cost. Some locations may allow payment through contactless methods, but checking the ChargePoint app before visiting ensures you know the accepted payment options.

Several membership or subscription options may reduce charging costs. ChargePoint offers a monthly membership program that provides discounted rates at participating stations, potentially saving regular users $10-20 monthly. Some EV manufacturers offer charging credits or partnerships that provide discounted rates at specific networks, so checking your vehicle's warranty or owner's materials may reveal additional savings.

It's worth noting that charging costs vary by location, time of day, and demand. Peak usage times may have higher per-minute rates for DC fast charging. Planning shopping trips during off-peak times or using Level 2 chargers when you have adequate time can reduce overall charging expenses.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate your typical charging cost by noting your vehicle's battery size and charging speed. Compare this to home charging rates to understand whether Walmart charging is a primary charging solution or a convenience option for shopping trips and travel.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Walmart EV Charging Station

Using a Walmart EV charging station involves several straightforward steps. First, locate an available charger using the ChargePoint app, which shows real-time availability. Once at the station, ensure your vehicle is parked close enough to the charger for the cable to reach your charging port comfortably. Most Level 2 chargers have cables with 25-foot lengths, while DC fast chargers may be slightly longer.

Before starting, download the ChargePoint app to your phone if you haven't already. Create an account with an email address and set up a payment method. The app is free, and account creation takes just a few minutes. Once your account is active, you're ready to begin charging at any ChargePoint location.

To start a charging session, open the ChargePoint app and select the specific charger you're using. The app displays the charger's port number or location identifier, helping you confirm you're at the correct station. Tap "Start Charging" in the app. Some chargers may require you to hold your phone near an NFC reader on the charger itself to initiate the session.

After starting the session, connect your vehicle's charging cable to your car's charging port. For Level 2 chargers, this is typically a standard connector. For DC fast chargers, the connector type depends on your vehicle—some use CCS, others use CHAdeMO or Tesla's connector, so verify compatibility before arriving.

Monitor your charging progress through the ChargePoint app, which updates in real time and shows estimated completion time. You can shop at Walmart during this time. Most Level 2 chargers take 4-8 hours to fully charge a vehicle, while DC fast chargers typically require 20-40 minutes.

When your vehicle reaches your desired charge level, you can end the session manually through the app. The ChargePoint app provides a receipt showing session duration, energy transferred, and total cost. Your payment method is charged automatically.

Practical Takeaway: Before your first visit, download the ChargePoint app, create an account, and test it
