Send Your Southwest Airlines Points Guide

Understanding Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Points

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards is a frequent flyer program where members earn points for flying with Southwest and using affiliated partners. These points function as a currency within the program and can be used for various travel-related purchases. When you fly with Southwest, you earn points based on the fare type and distance traveled. The program operates differently from some competitor airlines because it doesn't use traditional mileage calculations—instead, the points you earn remain the same regardless of flight distance.

The Rapid Rewards program includes several membership tiers: A-List, A-List Preferred, and A-List Select. Each tier is reached by meeting spending or flight segment requirements within a calendar year. Higher tiers provide additional benefits such as priority boarding, free checked bags on qualifying flights, and bonus points on future bookings. New members automatically start at the base membership level and can advance through earning.

Points are earned not only through flying but also through credit card spending, car rentals, hotel stays, and other partner activities. For example, a Southwest credit card typically earns points on everyday purchases made with that card. Partner airlines and travel companies also offer ways to earn points without flying on Southwest directly. This variety of earning methods means that building a point balance doesn't require frequent air travel alone.

Understanding how many points you currently have is straightforward—you can view your balance by logging into your Rapid Rewards account on Southwest's website or mobile application. Your account shows a complete history of point transactions, including when points were earned and how they were used. This transparency allows you to track your progress toward specific redemption goals.

Practical Takeaway: Review your current Rapid Rewards balance and earning rate by logging into your account. Note which activities (flying, credit card use, partner purchases) generate the most points for your lifestyle, then focus on those activities to build your balance toward your travel goals.

How to Transfer Points Between Rapid Rewards Accounts

Southwest Airlines allows Rapid Rewards members to transfer points to another member's account through a formal transfer process. This feature exists to help members support family members, friends, or other individuals who are working toward specific travel goals. The transfer process involves several steps and operates under specific rules that members should understand before initiating a transfer.

To transfer points, both the sending member and the receiving member must have active Rapid Rewards accounts. The person sending the points logs into their account on Southwest's website and navigates to the points transfer section. From there, they can enter the recipient's Rapid Rewards number and specify the exact number of points to transfer. The minimum transfer amount is typically 1,000 points, and transfers are processed by Southwest within a specific timeframe after the transaction is initiated.

Southwest charges a fee for point transfers, which varies based on the number of points being transferred. For example, transferring 1,000 to 10,000 points might cost one amount, while larger transfers cost more. This fee structure encourages members to think carefully about transfers rather than moving points casually. The fee is deducted from the sender's account, so if someone wants to transfer 5,000 points and the fee is $25 worth of points, they need to have enough points to cover both the transfer and the fee.

Once a transfer is initiated, it cannot be reversed or cancelled. This is an important consideration because the action is permanent. Members should double-check the recipient's Rapid Rewards number before confirming a transfer to ensure points go to the intended person. Points appear in the recipient's account within the timeframe specified by Southwest at the time of transfer.

Practical Takeaway: If you're considering transferring points to someone else, first verify their Rapid Rewards account number directly with them, calculate the total cost including transfer fees, and confirm you have sufficient points for both the transfer and the fee before proceeding with the transaction.

Gift Cards and Transferable Redemption Options

Beyond direct point transfers, Southwest offers other ways to share the value of your Rapid Rewards points with others. One primary option is purchasing Southwest gift cards using your points. These gift cards can be given to anyone and used by the recipient to book Southwest flights or purchase other travel-related items through Southwest's platform. This method provides flexibility because the recipient can use the gift card on their own schedule and doesn't require you to transfer points directly into their account.

When you purchase a Southwest gift card with points, you exchange your points for a dollar-value gift card. The redemption rate—how many points equal one dollar of gift card value—varies but typically falls in a specific range. For instance, if the rate is approximately 0.7 cents per point, redeeming 10,000 points would provide roughly a $70 gift card. This rate may fluctuate, so members see the exact rate before completing the purchase.

Southwest gift cards purchased with points work identically to gift cards purchased with money. Recipients receive a code and can apply it to their Southwest account or use it when booking flights as a guest. The gift card balance appears in the recipient's account and can be used for flights, seat upgrades, Early Bird Check-In, and other Southwest services. Gift cards don't expire, so recipients can use them whenever they're ready to travel.

Another redemption option involves booking travel on behalf of someone else using your own points. You can use your Rapid Rewards points to purchase a flight for another person by providing their name and information during the booking process. This differs from a gift card because you're completing the booking directly rather than giving the recipient a prepaid balance to use as they choose. This method works well if you know exactly what flight the recipient needs.

Practical Takeaway: If you want to share your points' value without transferring points directly, consider purchasing a Southwest gift card with your points and giving it to the recipient, or book a specific flight for them using your points if you know their travel plans in advance.

Redemption Strategies and Point Value Maximization

Understanding how to use your Rapid Rewards points effectively helps you get the most value from your earnings. Points can be redeemed for various travel-related expenses beyond just flights. Learning about these options allows you to make informed decisions about how to use your accumulated balance. Different redemption categories offer different point-to-dollar-value ratios, meaning some uses of points provide better value than others.

Flight bookings represent the most common redemption option. When you book a flight with points, the number of points required varies based on the fare class and travel date. Peak travel dates and premium fare classes typically require more points than off-peak travel and basic economy fares. Booking flights during less popular times—such as midweek or during shoulder seasons—can require significantly fewer points than peak holiday or weekend travel. For example, a cross-country flight during winter might require 25,000 points, while the same route during summer vacation season could cost 35,000 points or more.

Southwest also allows points to be redeemed for seat upgrades, such as Early Bird Check-In, which provides automatic boarding position assignment, or Upgraded Boardings, which move you to an earlier boarding group on a specific flight. These upgrades cost fewer points than a full ticket but add convenience to your travel. Additionally, points can sometimes be used toward other travel expenses like hotel stays or car rentals through partner programs, though the availability and point-to-value ratio vary.

Several strategies can help maximize point value. One approach involves "sweet spot" booking—learning which routes and dates offer the best point values and timing travel accordingly. Another involves using points for shorter flights, where the point requirements may be lower than longer routes. Some members also monitor for promotional point offers, where booking flights or using affiliated services provides bonus points beyond the standard earning rate. Combining these strategies with a credit card that earns points on everyday purchases allows for more frequent redemptions.

Practical Takeaway: Before redeeming points for a flight, check multiple dates and times to see which options require fewer points. Calculate the point-to-dollar value (total points required divided by the flight's cash price) to ensure you're getting reasonable value, and consider redeeming points for off-peak travel rather than peak season dates.

Partner Programs and Earning Points Beyond Flying

Southwest's Rapid Rewards program extends far beyond airline flights through partnerships with other companies. These partnerships allow members to earn points when using partner services, even without flying on Southwest. Understanding these partner relationships helps members build their point balance through everyday activities and travel-related services beyond air travel.
