Send Money to Inmate Commissary Account Guide

Understanding Prison Commissary Systems and How They Work

A prison commissary is an on-site store where incarcerated individuals can purchase items like snacks, hygiene products, clothing, and writing supplies. Think of it as a retail shop located inside the correctional facility. Inmates typically cannot leave their cells to shop freely—instead, they order from a catalog or digital system and the items are delivered to them. The commissary provides access to products that aren't supplied by the facility itself, which allows people in custody to maintain personal hygiene standards and purchase comfort items within security guidelines.

Every correctional facility operates its commissary slightly differently. Federal prisons, state prisons, county jails, and private facilities each have their own rules about which items are permitted, pricing, and ordering schedules. Some facilities offer commissary access several times per week, while others limit it to once weekly or less frequently. The items available vary widely—a facility might stock basic toiletries in one location but limit them in another due to security concerns or vendor contracts.

Commissary accounts work like prepaid systems. Money is deposited into an inmate's account, and they use that balance to make purchases. The inmate submits an order form, the commissary staff process it, items are packed, and they're delivered to the person's cell or a designated area. Some facilities now use digital tablet systems where inmates can browse and order directly, while others still use paper forms exclusively. The balance typically appears in the inmate's account within a few business days after deposit, depending on the facility's processing speed.

The items available through commissary serve practical purposes. Hygiene products like toothpaste, soap, and deodorant are essential for health and dignity. Snacks provide nutrition beyond standard meals. Phone credits allow communication with family. Writing supplies help with legal matters and correspondence. Some items like instant coffee or specialized shampoos address specific needs or preferences that facility-provided goods don't meet.

Practical takeaway: Before sending money, contact the specific facility where the person is housed to learn about their commissary system, what items they sell, current pricing, and any restrictions on deposits. Each facility has unique policies—what works at one doesn't necessarily work at another.

Methods for Depositing Money Into an Inmate's Commissary Account

Multiple companies now operate as third-party money transfer services specifically designed for sending funds to incarcerated individuals. The largest providers include GTL (Global Tel Link), Securus Technologies, JPay, Zarifa, and CorrLinks. These companies have contracts with correctional facilities and provide the technology infrastructure for processing deposits. They operate websites and mobile apps where family members and friends can send money quickly from home. Most services charge a transaction fee ranging from $1.50 to $3.95 per deposit, depending on the transfer method and company.

Direct bank transfer is another method at some facilities. You contact the facility's business office and provide banking information to make a transfer. This method typically has lower or no fees but takes longer to process—usually 5-7 business days. Not all facilities offer this option, and those that do often have specific banking details and procedures you must follow exactly.

Mail-in payment remains an option at many institutions. You send a check or money order directly to the facility's commissary office with the inmate's name, inmate number, and facility name clearly written. This is the slowest method, often taking 2-3 weeks to appear in the account, and requires careful attention to the facility's specific mailing address. Some facilities no longer accept mail payments due to processing costs and security concerns.

Phone-based deposits work through some third-party companies. You call a dedicated number, provide payment information, and the funds are transferred. This method is convenient but typically has higher fees than online transfers. Western Union and MoneyGram also offer inmate money transfer services at certain locations, though availability depends on which facilities they serve.

Some facilities operate their own internal payment systems where you can deposit money through their specific website or payment portal. These in-house systems usually have lower fees or no fees at all but exist in fewer facilities than third-party options. When the facility operates its own system, they often encourage or require using it instead of third-party providers.

Practical takeaway: Contact the inmate's facility commissary department first to learn which payment methods they accept. Write down the specific instructions, required information, and current fee structure. Different facilities contract with different payment providers, so what works for one inmate may not work for another.

Gathering Required Information Before Making a Deposit

The inmate's identification number is the most critical piece of information. Every person in custody receives a unique inmate number when booked into the facility. This number must be entered correctly on every deposit—using wrong numbers can send money to the wrong person or cause the deposit to be rejected. Ask the inmate directly when communicating with them, or this information appears on commissary correspondence or account statements they may have received.

The full legal name as it appears in the facility's system matters as much as the inmate number. This should be the person's complete name, including middle name if they have one, and any suffixes like Jr. or III. Facilities match deposits against their database, and mismatches—like using a nickname instead of legal name—can cause processing delays or rejection.

The facility's correct name and location must be specified. A person might be housed in a specific unit or prison within a larger complex. For example, "Unit B at State Penitentiary" is more specific than just "State Penitentiary." Some states have multiple facilities with similar names, so accuracy is essential. The full mailing address or facility code helps ensure money reaches the right location.

If using a third-party payment service, you'll need to know which company the facility uses or confirm which ones they accept. You can usually find this on the facility's website or by calling their business office. Some facilities contract with one primary provider but accept others as alternatives, though alternative providers may charge higher fees.

Valid payment information is necessary—either a credit card, debit card, or bank account number depending on the transfer method. Most third-party services accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Some accept ACH transfers from bank accounts. Ensure payment information is current and valid to prevent transaction failures.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist with the inmate's name, inmate number, facility name, facility location, and the accepted payment methods before attempting any deposit. Keep this information stored safely for future reference, as you may need to make multiple deposits over time.

Understanding Fees, Processing Times, and Deposit Limits

Transaction fees vary significantly across payment methods and providers. Third-party online services typically charge $1.50 to $3.95 per transaction, regardless of the amount deposited. Some companies charge a percentage fee instead of a flat fee, particularly for larger amounts. A $50 deposit and a $500 deposit might cost the same flat fee, making larger deposits more economical. Phone-based deposits generally cost $3.00 to $5.95 due to higher processing costs. Mail-in payments and direct facility transfers usually have no fees or much lower fees, but the trade-off is significantly longer processing times.

Processing time depends on the deposit method. Online transfers through third-party services typically post within 24 hours during business days, though some show results within minutes. Phone-based transfers usually post within 24 hours. Mail-in checks or money orders take 10-21 days depending on postal service and facility processing. Direct bank transfers to the facility take 5-7 business days. Weekend deposits may not process until the next business day. It's important to plan ahead and not expect deposits to appear immediately if the inmate needs funds for commissary ordering on a specific date.

Deposit limits exist at most facilities to prevent excessive account balances and control what incarcerated individuals can purchase. Many facilities cap individual balances at $300 to $500, though some allow higher amounts. There may also be limits on single deposits—for example, maximum of $200 per transaction. Some facilities restrict daily deposit totals as well. These limits are set by the facility and enforced by their systems, meaning an attempt to deposit above the limit will simply be rejected or the excess will be returned.

Some facilities charge fees for commissary services that get deducted from the account balance. These aren't deposit fees but rather fees the facility charges for maintaining the commissary system. Administrative fees, service charges, or monthly fees may be withheld from the balance. These vary by facility and aren't always clearly advertised, so it's worth asking
