Learn How To Measure Cubic Feet For Storage

Understanding Cubic Feet as a Measurement

Cubic feet is a standard measurement used to describe the volume or three-dimensional space that something takes up. When you measure storage needs, you're calculating how much physical room your belongings will occupy inside a unit or container. One cubic foot equals a cube that measures one foot in length, one foot in width, and one foot in height. To visualize this, imagine a box that's about 12 inches on each side—that's one cubic foot.

Storage facilities commonly advertise their units in cubic feet rather than square footage because it gives a more accurate picture of usable space. A 5-by-10-foot room with 8-foot ceilings, for example, provides 400 cubic feet of storage capacity. This measurement method accounts for height, which is crucial since many storage units extend from floor to ceiling and can accommodate stacked items or tall furniture.

Understanding cubic feet helps you make informed decisions about which storage unit size will meet your needs. If you underestimate your storage requirements, you may run out of space and need to rent an additional unit, which increases your monthly costs. Overestimating can result in paying for unused space you don't need. According to the Self Storage Association, the average American household uses between 50 and 150 cubic feet of storage space, though this varies widely based on lifestyle and possessions.

The basic formula for calculating cubic feet is straightforward: length × width × height = cubic feet. This same formula applies whether you're measuring an entire storage room, a single box, or pieces of furniture. Once you understand this concept, you can break down your storage inventory into manageable sections and add up the totals to determine your overall storage needs.

Practical takeaway: Think of cubic feet as the total air space inside a container. Master this simple concept before moving forward with measuring your specific items, as it forms the foundation for all other calculations.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Measuring Individual Items

To measure cubic feet for individual items, you'll need a measuring tape, a notebook or digital device to record measurements, and a basic understanding of the formula: length × width × height = cubic feet. Start by measuring the longest dimension of an item. For a dresser, this might be its width. Measure from the furthest left point to the furthest right point, recording the measurement in feet and decimal points rather than feet and inches. For example, if something is 3 feet and 6 inches wide, record it as 3.5 feet.

Next, measure the depth of the item—how far it extends from front to back. For the dresser example, this would be the distance from the front of the drawers to the back of the unit. Then measure the height from the bottom to the top. Write all three measurements down clearly, keeping them organized by item name.

Once you have all three measurements for an item, multiply them together. If your dresser measures 3.5 feet wide, 1.5 feet deep, and 4 feet tall, the calculation would be: 3.5 × 1.5 × 4 = 21 cubic feet. This represents the total space that dresser will occupy in your storage unit.

For irregular-shaped items like lamps, mirrors, or artwork, use the smallest rectangular box that could contain the entire item. Measure from the furthest points in all directions. This method ensures you're accounting for any space the item actually uses, even if the object itself doesn't fill every part of that box. This is especially important for fragile items you might place in protective boxes or wrapping.

When measuring furniture that can be disassembled, consider whether you'll store it assembled or in pieces. A bed frame takes up significantly less space when the headboard, footboard, and side rails are separated and stacked. If you're breaking items into components, measure each piece separately and add those totals together for the complete cubic footage of that item.

Practical takeaway: Measure items in feet and decimals (not feet and inches), multiply your three dimensions together, and keep detailed notes organized by item name. This creates a reliable inventory you can reference later.

Measuring Boxes and Containers of Belongings

Most people store belongings in boxes, bins, suitcases, and containers rather than storing loose items. Measuring these containers is efficient because one measurement covers many items at once. Standard cardboard moving boxes come in common sizes that storage professionals recognize. A small box typically measures 16 × 12 × 12 inches (about 1.3 cubic feet), a medium box measures 18 × 18 × 16 inches (about 3.5 cubic feet), and a large box measures 24 × 18 × 18 inches (about 5.4 cubic feet).

If you're using standard-sized boxes, you may not need to measure each one individually. Simply count how many boxes you have in each size category and use the standard cubic footage for that size. However, if you're using non-standard boxes or storage bins, measuring them is necessary. Measure the exterior dimensions of the box—length, width, and height—and multiply those numbers together.

Storage bins designed for under-bed storage, closet shelves, or garage organization often have dimensions printed on the label or packaging. Check for this information before manually measuring, as it saves time. Common plastic storage bins range from 17 cubic feet down to 1 cubic foot, with many popular sizes landing around 3 to 8 cubic feet. Rubbermaid, Sterilite, and similar brands typically include volume capacity on their product descriptions or the bin itself.

When measuring suitcases and soft-sided storage bags, use the same approach: length × width × height. A standard medium suitcase measures approximately 25 × 17 × 11 inches, which calculates to about 3.3 cubic feet. A large upright suitcase might be 32 × 20 × 13 inches, equaling approximately 6.9 cubic feet. Soft-sided duffel bags vary more widely, so measuring these is particularly important.

Stack containers as you measure to develop an accurate picture of how they'll actually fit in your storage space. If you're planning to stack boxes three high, measure the height of one stack, not just one box. This accounting method helps prevent overcounting storage needs and gives you a more realistic sense of how your items will actually be arranged.

Practical takeaway: Use the dimensions printed on standard boxes when available, measure non-standard containers carefully, and stack similar items as you measure to get an accurate picture of your actual storage layout.

Calculating Total Storage Needs for Your Move

After measuring individual items and containers, create a master list that organizes everything you're storing into categories. Common categories include bedroom furniture, kitchen items, office equipment, seasonal decorations, books and media, clothing, and miscellaneous household goods. Add up all the cubic feet within each category, then add all categories together to get your total storage need in cubic feet.

For example, a typical household moving scenario might look like this: bedroom furniture totals 120 cubic feet, kitchen boxes total 45 cubic feet, living room furniture totals 85 cubic feet, seasonal items total 30 cubic feet, books and media total 25 cubic feet, and miscellaneous boxes total 55 cubic feet. The total would be 360 cubic feet.

When calculating totals, add an additional 10-15% to your final number to account for packing efficiency and the space between items that can't be perfectly filled. In the example above, 360 cubic feet plus 15% would equal 414 cubic feet. This buffer prevents you from being forced to squeeze additional items into a unit that's already at maximum capacity or from needing to rent additional space mid-lease.

If you're storing items in phases—moving some items immediately and others later—calculate storage needs separately for each phase. This helps you choose an appropriately sized unit from the beginning rather than upgrading later, which often involves additional fees and inconvenience. A phased approach also helps you track what you've stored and when you expect to retrieve it.

Review your measurements and calculations once more before contacting storage facilities. Errors in calculation can result in choosing a unit that's too small or too large. Many storage companies provide online calculators or size guides that cross-reference cubic feet with common room layouts (like "this space holds one bedroom of furniture"
