Learn How to Change Your Ring Doorbell Notification Sounds

Understanding Ring Doorbell Notification Settings

Ring doorbells send alerts to your phone, tablet, or computer when motion is detected or someone presses the doorbell button. These notifications help you stay aware of activity at your front door, whether you're home or away. However, the default notification sounds may not suit your preferences or lifestyle. Understanding how notification settings work is the foundation for customizing your experience.

When you first set up a Ring doorbell, notifications arrive through the Ring app using your device's default sound settings. The Ring doorbell itself has a built-in speaker that produces chimes when someone presses the button, separate from app notifications. This means you can customize both the sound on your phone and the chime sound on the doorbell unit itself. Many Ring users don't realize these are two different notification systems that can be adjusted independently.

The Ring app stores notification preferences in your account settings, which means your customizations sync across multiple devices if you use more than one phone or tablet. For example, if you change notification sounds on your iPhone, those same preferences may appear when you log into the app on an iPad. However, some settings are device-specific, meaning you can have different notification sounds on different phones if desired.

Different types of notifications exist within the Ring ecosystem. Motion alerts notify you when the doorbell's motion sensor detects movement. Ring alerts occur when someone actually presses the doorbell button. Live view notifications may alert you if someone accesses the camera feed. Package detection notifications inform you when the doorbell's AI detects a package delivery. Understanding which notifications you want to customize helps you prioritize which sounds to change first.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing any settings, take time to explore your Ring app's notification section. Spend a few minutes identifying which notification types you receive most frequently and which sounds bother you most. This awareness helps you make targeted changes that genuinely improve your daily experience rather than changing settings randomly.

Accessing Notification Settings in the Ring App

The Ring app serves as the control center for all your notification preferences. Whether you use an iPhone, Android phone, or tablet, the basic process for accessing these settings remains similar. The Ring app is available through the Apple App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices. If you haven't yet installed the Ring app on your phone, you'll need to do so to customize notification sounds.

Once you open the Ring app, look for the menu icon, typically located at the top left or bottom right of your screen depending on your device type. The menu icon usually appears as three horizontal lines (sometimes called a hamburger menu) or as your account initials in a circle. Tapping this menu opens a navigation drawer that displays various options for managing your Ring devices and account settings.

From the main menu, locate and select the "Notifications" or "Notification Settings" option. In some versions of the app, this option appears under "Settings" or "Preferences." If you're having difficulty finding this section, you can also access it by selecting your specific Ring doorbell device from the device list, then tapping the gear icon or settings button associated with that device. This device-specific settings page often contains notification options directly.

The notification settings screen displays several categories of alerts you can customize. You'll typically see options for "Motion Alerts," "Ring Alerts," "Package Alerts," and potentially other alert types depending on your Ring doorbell model. Each category usually has toggles to turn notifications on or off entirely, as well as options to customize the sound associated with that alert type. The layout may vary slightly between iOS and Android versions, but the core functionality remains consistent.

Some Ring users prefer to manage notifications at the device level rather than the app level. On your smartphone or tablet, you can visit your general device settings and locate the Ring app within notification or application settings. From here, you can control whether the Ring app sends notifications at all and which notification features the app can access. This is useful if you want to receive Ring notifications but prefer they arrive silently until you manually check the app.

Practical Takeaway: Write down the steps for accessing notifications on your specific device type and keep this list nearby. The first time you navigate to notification settings may feel confusing, but once you complete it once, the path becomes second nature. Knowing exactly where to find these settings means you can make quick adjustments whenever your preferences change.

Changing Notification Sounds on iPhone and iOS Devices

iPhone users can customize Ring notification sounds in two primary ways. The first method involves changing sounds directly through the Ring app's notification settings. Open the Ring app, navigate to notification settings, and select the alert type you wish to modify, such as motion alerts or ring alerts. You'll see an option to select a sound for that alert type. Tap on the sound option to view available choices.

The Ring app offers a selection of pre-loaded sounds you can choose from. These sounds range from gentle chimes and bells to more attention-grabbing tones and alarms. You can preview each sound before selecting it by tapping the play icon next to the sound name. This preview feature helps you understand how the sound will actually sound during a real notification, which is valuable since speaker quality can vary significantly between preview and actual use.

Beyond the Ring app's built-in sounds, iPhone users have a second customization avenue. Your device's general notification settings allow you to configure how the Ring app delivers alerts. Navigate to your iPhone's Settings app, then select "Notifications." Scroll through the app list until you find "Ring." Within the Ring notification settings, you can choose to have notifications arrive silently, with sound, with vibration, or with any combination of these options. You can also select from your device's system notification sounds rather than relying only on sounds the Ring app provides.

When you select a notification sound through your device's general settings, all Ring notifications will use that chosen sound unless you've customized individual notification types within the Ring app to override this setting. This creates a hierarchy where app-specific sound settings take precedence over device-wide settings. For users who want all Ring notifications to sound the same, simply customize the device-level settings and leave the app-level settings at their defaults.

Critical Focus Modes on newer iPhones offer another layer of customization. You can configure which apps are allowed to send notifications during specific Focus Modes. For example, you might allow all Ring notifications during your "Home" Focus Mode but limit them during your "Work" Focus Mode. This approach doesn't change the notification sound itself but rather controls when you receive notifications and how prominently they interrupt you.

Practical Takeaway: Test your chosen notification sound in a realistic scenario before finalizing your selection. Have someone press your doorbell or trigger the motion sensor, then observe how well you notice the sound from different rooms in your home. What sounds perfect during preview might be too quiet when you're vacuuming or too jarring when you're trying to concentrate. Adjust accordingly based on real-world performance.

Changing Notification Sounds on Android Devices

Android users navigate notification customization through a similar but slightly different process compared to iOS. Open the Ring app on your Android phone or tablet and access the main menu as described in the previous section. Navigate to "Notifications" or "Notification Settings," then select the specific alert type you want to modify. Android versions of the Ring app display sound options in a list format, and you can tap any sound to preview it before selection.

Android devices offer access to your phone's notification sounds system, which Ring can integrate with. When you select a sound within the Ring app, you may see options to choose from both Ring-provided sounds and sounds from your device's system sound library. This gives Android users potentially more sound options than iOS users receive directly through the Ring app, though the exact selection varies by device manufacturer and Android version.

To access device-level notification settings on Android, navigate to your phone's Settings app and locate "Apps" or "Applications." Find and select "Ring" from the app list. Tap "Notifications" or "App Notifications," and you'll see notification channels specific to the Ring app. Android organizes Ring notifications into channels such as "Motion Alerts" and "Ring Alerts," allowing granular control over individual notification types at the device level. Each channel can have its own sound, vibration pattern, and visual indicator settings.

Many Android devices include a "Notification Sounds" option within their general sound settings. However, most apps, including Ring, pull notification sounds from their in-app settings rather than these device-wide sound libraries. This means customizing notification sounds primarily happens within the Ring app itself for Android devices, with device-level settings serving more as overrides for whether
