Learn How Ignition Interlock Devices Work Today

What Is an Ignition Interlock Device and Why Are They Used?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small electronic instrument installed in a vehicle's ignition system. The device prevents a car from starting if it detects alcohol on a driver's breath. These devices are roughly the size of a car radio or cellular phone and connect directly to the vehicle's ignition, starter, and fuel pump systems.

When a driver attempts to start their vehicle, they must blow into the IID's mouthpiece. The device measures the driver's breath alcohol concentration (BAC) and sends a signal to the ignition system. If the BAC reading is below the legal threshold—typically 0.02% to 0.04% depending on jurisdiction—the vehicle starts normally. If the reading is above the threshold, the engine will not turn on.

Courts and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices in all 50 U.S. states now use ignition interlock devices as a sentencing or licensing requirement. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 2 million interlock devices have been installed nationwide since their widespread adoption began in the 1990s. These devices became common after research demonstrated they reduced repeat DUI arrests by up to 64% among drivers using them.

The primary purpose of an IID is public safety. Drunk driving fatalities account for roughly 13% of all traffic deaths in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By preventing impaired drivers from operating vehicles, these devices serve as a physical barrier between risky behavior and highway accidents. Courts view them as both a punishment and a rehabilitation tool.

Practical Takeaway: An ignition interlock device is a breath-testing machine that must be installed in your vehicle's ignition system. Understanding how it functions helps you know what to expect during daily use and why it exists as a legal requirement.

How the Testing Process Works During Daily Use

Operating a vehicle with an installed ignition interlock requires a specific testing procedure each time you want to drive. The process is straightforward but must be followed correctly. When you enter your vehicle and sit in the driver's seat, you must locate the IID unit, which is typically mounted on the dashboard or steering column where you can easily see and access it.

To begin, press the button or follow the device's prompts to initiate a breath test. You will then blow into the mouthpiece—not too softly and not too forcefully, but with steady, continuous breath. The typical test requires 5 to 6 seconds of breath flow. The device analyzes your breath in real time and displays your BAC reading on a small screen. If your BAC is below the legal threshold (often 0.02%), the device beeps or lights up to signal a pass, and you can start your vehicle.

Beyond the initial startup test, some IID models are programmed to require rolling retests while you are already driving. These random tests alert you with a series of beeps and a flashing light, giving you typically 5 to 15 minutes to safely pull over and provide another breath sample. This feature prevents drivers from having someone else blow into the device at startup and then driving after consuming alcohol. If you miss a rolling retest or fail it, the device logs the violation and may trigger specific responses—such as honking the horn or flashing lights—to alert you and others on the road.

All test results—both passes and failures—are recorded electronically by the IID. These data logs are stored in the device's memory and transmitted to a monitoring agency or service provider at regular intervals, usually weekly or monthly. Your driving record, test results, and any violations are reviewed by your probation officer, the court, or the DMV, depending on your sentence or licensing requirements.

Practical Takeaway: Every time you drive, you must pass a breath test before your engine starts, and you may be randomly tested while driving. Understanding this routine helps you prepare for the requirements and know what happens if you miss or fail a test.

Technology and Sensors: How Devices Detect Alcohol

Ignition interlock devices use electrochemical or fuel cell sensor technology to detect and measure alcohol in your breath. These sensors are highly sensitive and specifically calibrated to identify ethanol, the type of alcohol in beverages. The technology is the same type used in breath-testing devices administered by police officers during traffic stops, though IID versions are designed for repeated daily use over months or years.

When you blow into an IID, your breath passes through a chamber containing the sensor. Ethanol molecules in your breath chemically react with the sensor's electrodes, creating an electrical current. The device measures the strength of this current and converts it into a BAC reading displayed in percentage form (such as 0.05%). The entire analysis takes only a few seconds. Most devices are accurate to within 0.01% BAC, meaning they provide precise measurements comparable to professional breathalyzers used in law enforcement.

Different IID manufacturers—including SmartStart, Alcohol Detection Systems (ADS), LifeSafer, and others—produce devices with varying features, but all operate on similar electrochemical principles. Many modern devices include anti-tampering technology. For example, some models include a camera that photographs the person blowing into the device to verify identity. Others include pressure sensors that detect artificial breath, such as air pumped from a bag. Temperature sensors verify that the breath is actually human breath and not room-temperature air. GPS technology in some devices tracks vehicle location and movement patterns.

Calibration is a critical maintenance factor for these devices. Manufacturers recommend calibration checks every 30 to 60 days to ensure sensor accuracy. During calibration, a technician uses a reference alcohol solution to verify the device's readings against a known standard. If the device reads outside acceptable tolerance ranges, it is recalibrated or replaced. This maintenance requirement protects against both false positives (incorrectly detecting alcohol when none is present) and false negatives (failing to detect alcohol when it is present).

Practical Takeaway: Ignition interlock devices use sensitive chemical sensors to measure alcohol in your breath, and these sensors require regular maintenance to stay accurate. Knowing the technology helps you understand why calibration appointments matter and why certain behaviors (like coughing or eating) may affect test results.

Installation, Costs, and Maintenance Requirements

Installing an ignition interlock device requires a certified technician and typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Professional installation locations include authorized service centers operated by IID manufacturers, some automotive repair shops, and dedicated interlock service offices. Many states maintain lists of approved installation facilities. During installation, the technician connects the device to your vehicle's ignition, starter motor, and fuel pump systems using hardwired electrical connections. The mouthpiece and display unit are mounted in a visible, accessible location inside the vehicle.

The financial costs associated with ignition interlock devices include several components. Installation typically costs between $75 and $200 per device. Monthly monitoring and service fees range from $50 to $150, depending on your jurisdiction and the service provider. Calibration appointments, required every 30 to 60 days, cost between $20 and $50. Removal fees when the device is no longer required range from $50 to $100. For a one-year IID requirement, total costs typically range from $1,000 to $2,500. Some individuals may have multiple devices if they own more than one vehicle, which increases total expense.

Throughout the IID period, several maintenance responsibilities fall to the vehicle owner. You must attend all scheduled calibration appointments—missing appointments often results in violations logged against your record and may extend your requirement period. You must maintain the vehicle in working condition and keep the IID powered and functional at all times. If the device malfunctions or battery dies, you cannot legally operate the vehicle until it is repaired. You must keep your driving record clean—accumulating new traffic violations or additional failed breath tests may trigger extended IID requirements. Some jurisdictions prohibit anyone else from driving your vehicle, while others allow family members or colleagues to drive if they understand they may need to pass breath tests.

Various programs and funding resources exist in some areas to help cover IID costs. Some nonprofit organizations, court-ordered restitution programs, or alcohol treatment facilities may provide financial assistance. Discussing cost concerns with your probation officer, attorney, or the IID service provider may reveal options specific to your situation. Community action agencies in some regions maintain information about financial assistance programs.
