Learn How Baccarat Works and Understand the Odds

How the Basic Rules of Baccarat Work

Baccarat is a card game played between a player and a banker. The goal is straightforward: predict which hand will have cards totaling closest to 9. Unlike poker or blackjack, you don't play against other people at the table. Instead, you're betting on the outcome of a predetermined game where the dealer follows strict rules about when to deal additional cards.

The game starts with two cards dealt to both the player hand and the banker hand. Each card has a point value. Number cards 2 through 9 are worth their face value. Tens and face cards (jacks, queens, kings) are worth zero. Aces are worth 1 point. When you add up the values of two or more cards, only the last digit counts. For example, a king and a 7 total 17, but in baccarat, that hand is worth 7 points. A 6 and an 8 total 14, which is worth 4 points in the game.

The rules about drawing a third card are fixed and don't depend on player decisions. If either hand totals 8 or 9 with the first two cards, no additional cards are drawn. This two-card total is called a "natural," and the hand is complete. If neither hand has 8 or 9, the player hand acts first. The player hand must take a third card if it totals 0 through 5. The player hand stands if it totals 6 or 7. After the player hand is complete, the banker hand follows its own rules for drawing a third card based on its total and what the player's third card was (if one was drawn).

The banker's drawing rules are more complex because they account for what happened with the player hand. Generally, the banker stands on totals of 7 or higher. On totals of 0 through 6, the banker usually draws, but the exact decision depends on what the player's third card is. These rules exist to ensure the game runs fairly and consistently every time.

Practical takeaway: Before playing, memorize that aces equal 1, numbered cards are face value, and face cards equal zero. Understanding that only the last digit of any total counts will help you quickly spot winning hands. The third-card rules are set in stone, so the game has no strategy decisions for you to make—everything is predetermined.

Understanding the Three Possible Outcomes

In baccarat, there are only three outcomes to any hand: the player wins, the banker wins, or there is a tie. Each outcome pays differently and has different odds of occurring. Most players focus on betting player or banker because ties pay much less frequently and have worse odds for the bettor.

If you bet on the player hand and the player hand ends with a higher total than the banker hand, you win even money. This means a $10 bet pays $10, giving you $20 total (your original bet plus $10 in winnings). Player hand wins happen in approximately 50.68% of hands when ties are excluded from the calculation. This slight advantage exists because the player hand acts first, and the banker must respond to the player's third card. Over many hands, this small edge shows up consistently.

If you bet on the banker hand and the banker hand wins, you also win even money—but most casinos take a commission on banker bets. Typically, the commission is 5%, meaning you receive $9.50 in profit on a $10 bet (keeping your original $10 as well). Despite this commission, banker hands win approximately 50.68% of the time. When you factor in the commission, banker bets are slightly worse for the bettor than player bets, but the difference is small. Over 100 hands, the mathematical house advantage on banker bets is about 1.06%, compared to 1.24% for player bets.

A tie occurs when both hands have the same total. Ties happen in roughly 9.52% of all hands dealt. If you bet on a tie and it happens, casinos typically pay 8:1 on your money, meaning a $10 bet wins $80. Some casinos offer 9:1 payouts on ties. However, because ties occur less frequently than either hand winning, the house advantage on tie bets is much higher—around 14.36% with an 8:1 payout. This means tie bets are mathematically the worst choice for the player over time.

Practical takeaway: Understand that banker and player bets are nearly equal in terms of odds, with banker having a slight disadvantage due to the 5% commission. Avoid tie bets because they occur infrequently and give the house a much larger edge. Your best strategy is to pick one (player or banker) and stick with it, knowing the long-term odds slightly favor neither option significantly.

The House Edge and Long-Term Odds

The house edge in baccarat refers to the mathematical advantage the casino has over the player across many hands. Understanding this concept helps explain why casinos offer baccarat games—they are profitable for the house even when players win individual bets. The house edge is expressed as a percentage and represents how much of your money, on average, the casino will keep over a very long period of play.

For player hand bets, the house edge is 1.24%. This means that if you bet $100 per hand on player for thousands of hands, the casino expects to keep about $1.24 of your money over that period. For banker hand bets with a 5% commission, the house edge is 1.06%, making it slightly better. These edges are considered low compared to many other casino games. For example, American roulette has a house edge of 2.7%, and slot machines often have edges ranging from 2% to 15% depending on the machine. This makes baccarat one of the better games mathematically for the person betting.

The reason a house edge exists comes from the rules of the game. Even though player and banker hands have nearly equal odds, the player hand's advantage from acting first is balanced out by the banker's commission. No bet in baccarat offers true even odds—there is always a slight mathematical advantage built in for the casino. Over millions of hands across all their tables, this small percentage translates to millions of dollars in profit.

It's important to understand that the house edge does not mean you will lose money on any given day or session. In a single night at a baccarat table, a player can easily win $1,000 or lose $1,000. The house edge describes what happens mathemationally over enormous sample sizes. A player who bets $100 per hand for 10 hands will not necessarily lose $1.24. That player might win several hands and leave ahead. The house edge only becomes predictable and reliable when thousands and thousands of hands are played, which is why casinos can reliably profit from baccarat tables while individual players can have profitable sessions.

Practical takeaway: The house edge in baccarat (around 1.24% for player bets and 1.06% for banker bets) is one of the lowest in casino gaming. This does not mean you cannot win in the short term, but it does mean the mathematical odds slightly favor the casino in the long run. Use this information to set realistic expectations about your odds of winning or losing money.

Probability and Frequency of Outcomes

Probability in baccarat describes the likelihood of different outcomes occurring. When you understand probabilities, you can make more informed decisions about which bets to place. The probabilities in baccarat are based on mathematical calculations using the standard 52-card deck (or in many casinos, 6 or 8 decks shuffled together to prevent card counting). These calculations have been verified through computer simulations and millions of hands of actual play.

Out of every 100 hands dealt, you can expect the banker to win approximately 50.68 hands, the player to win approximately 49.32 hands, and a tie to occur approximately 9.52 times. Notice these numbers add up to more than 100 because I'm showing what happens in 100 hands plus the ties. If you remove ties from the calculation (which many players do when evaluating odds), the banker wins 50.68% of the time and the player wins 49.32% of the time. This split is remarkably close to 50-50, which is why baccarat appeals to many players—it genuinely is nearly an
