Learn About Texas Driver License Photo Requirements

Understanding Texas Driver License Photo Standards

Texas driver license photos must meet specific technical and appearance standards set by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). These requirements exist to ensure photos work properly with identification systems and remain consistent across all licenses issued in the state. The photo specifications apply whether you're getting your first license, renewing an existing one, or obtaining a Real ID-compliant license.

The photo must be a recent color image taken within the last 6 months. "Recent" means the photo should reflect your current appearance reasonably well. Texas does not accept black and white photos or digitally altered images. The photo must show your face clearly and directly, typically from the shoulders up. The image size required is 2x2 inches, which is the standard for most state identification documents.

Resolution requirements specify that photos must be at least 600x600 pixels at 300 dots per inch (DPI) if submitting digitally. This ensures the image quality remains clear when printed on your physical license card. Photos taken at lower resolutions may appear blurry or pixelated on your actual license, making identification difficult.

The background must be plain white or off-white with no patterns, shadows, or other objects visible. This neutral background helps the photo meet federal identification standards and prevents distractions from your facial features. The lighting should be even across your face with no harsh shadows on one side.

Practical Takeaway: Before scheduling your DPS appointment, have a recent photo taken that meets these specifications. Many DPS offices have photo services available on-site, or you can bring a compliant photo from a professional photographer. Knowing these standards beforehand can prevent appointment delays.

Facial Features and Expression Requirements

Your facial expression in a driver license photo must be neutral or natural. Texas does not allow extreme expressions, excessive smiling, or grimacing. Your mouth should be closed or relaxed in a natural position. This requirement helps maintain consistency with identification standards used nationwide and ensures the photo can be used reliably for identity verification purposes.

Your eyes must be clearly visible and open, looking directly at the camera. Glasses are permitted, but they must not create a glare that obscures your eyes. If you typically wear glasses, you should wear them for your license photo since the photo must represent how you normally appear. Tinted or dark glasses are not permitted because they prevent clear visibility of your eyes.

Your head must be straight-on in the photo, not tilted, turned, or angled. A tilted head can make the photo unsuitable for biometric matching systems used by law enforcement and identification verification services. Your face should take up roughly 50-69% of the photo frame, meaning you should be close enough that your facial features are clearly visible but not so close that your head appears cut off or distorted.

Facial hair is permitted and does not need to be removed. If you have a beard, mustache, or goatee, you may keep it for your photo. However, facial hair should not cover your mouth or chin area in a way that significantly alters your recognizable features. Hair should not fall across your face or eyes. If you typically wear your hair in a certain style, that's how it should appear in your license photo since the image should represent your normal appearance.

Visible scars, birthmarks, and tattoos do not disqualify you from having a valid driver license photo. These identifying features are actually helpful for identification purposes and should be visible in your photo. Makeup and normal grooming are acceptable.

Practical Takeaway: Practice your neutral expression before your appointment. A natural, relaxed face works best. Avoid smiling broadly, frowning, or making unusual expressions. Look directly at the camera with both eyes open and your head straight-on.

Head Coverings and Religious Headwear Policies

Texas driver license photo rules address religious and cultural head coverings under specific circumstances. The state recognizes that some individuals wear head coverings for religious or medical reasons. However, the general rule is that head coverings cannot obscure facial features needed for identification purposes.

Religious head coverings such as hijabs, turbans, bonnets, or similar items are permitted in Texas driver license photos provided they do not cover any part of your face from the hairline to the chin. The entire face area must be visible and unobstructed. This means you can wear a head covering that frames your face, but nothing can cover your forehead, cheeks, nose, mouth, or jaw area.

Medical head coverings may be permitted in limited circumstances. If you have a medical condition requiring a head covering, you should contact your local DPS office to discuss your specific situation. Documentation from a healthcare provider may be required. The same principle applies: facial features must remain fully visible.

Hats, baseball caps, and similar non-religious head coverings are not permitted in driver license photos. These items are considered accessories rather than religious or medical necessities. The photo should show your hairline and forehead clearly.

If your head covering does obscure part of your face, the DPS may request that you remove it for the photo. You have the right to request an alternative photo process if you have religious objections to removing a head covering, but you should communicate this preference when you schedule your appointment or arrive for your photo session.

Practical Takeaway: If you wear religious head coverings, contact your local DPS office before your appointment to confirm your specific head covering is acceptable. Bring documentation if required. Arrive prepared to have your full face visible in the photo while keeping your head covering in place if it meets the standards.

Eyeglasses, Sunglasses, and Vision Correction in Photos

If you wear corrective lenses, you should wear your eyeglasses for your driver license photo. The photo represents how you typically appear, and if you normally wear glasses for driving, they should be in your license photo. This helps with identification and ensures the photo accurately reflects your everyday appearance. Prescription glasses must not create a glare or reflection that obscures your eyes.

The frames of your eyeglasses should not cover more than a small portion of your eyes. Large, oversized frames that cover significant eye area are not ideal, though they may be permitted if your eyes remain clearly visible. Your pupils and the area around your eyes must be distinguishable in the photo. If your glasses create a strong reflection from camera flash, the photographer may ask you to adjust the angle slightly to reduce glare while keeping your eyes visible.

Photochromic lenses that darken in sunlight should be clear when the photo is taken indoors. If you have lenses that change darkness levels, make sure they're fully clear during your appointment. Your eyes must be clearly visible, not obscured by tinted or darkened lenses.

Sunglasses and dark-tinted glasses are not permitted for driver license photos. Even if you wear sunglasses regularly while driving, they cannot be worn in your license photo because they obstruct eye visibility. The same applies to ski goggles, swimming goggles, or other protective eyewear. These items must be removed for the photo.

Contact lenses are permitted and do not require any special consideration. If you wear contacts, you can wear them during your photo appointment just as you would any other day. Some people find that contacts make their eyes appear slightly different in photos compared to how they look with glasses, but both options are acceptable to Texas DPS.

Practical Takeaway: Wear the vision correction you typically use. If you wear eyeglasses, bring them to your appointment. Make sure any glasses you wear don't create glare that obscures your eyes. If you wear sunglasses or tinted lenses in your car, remove them for the photo session.

Real ID Compliance and Photo Requirements

Texas offers both standard driver licenses and Real ID-compliant licenses. Real ID is a federal security standard that makes driver licenses acceptable for domestic air travel and entry to federal facilities. The photo requirements are essentially the same for both types of licenses, with one important addition: Real ID photos must comply with federal biometric standards established by the Department of Homeland Security.

For Real ID compliance, photos must meet all the standard Texas requirements already described—neutral background, recent image, clear facial visibility, proper lighting, and appropriate sizing. The federal standard adds emphasis on precise head positioning and face-to-frame ratio. Your face should occupy between 50% and 69% of the total photo area. This consistency helps with facial recognition technology used at
