What Senior Move Managers Do

A senior move manager is a professional who specializes in helping older adults plan and carry out residential moves. These professionals work with seniors and their families to manage nearly every aspect of relocation, from initial planning through unpacking in a new home. Unlike general moving companies that primarily handle transportation of belongings, senior move managers take a broader approach that considers the emotional, physical, and logistical challenges that often come with moving later in life.

Senior move managers typically offer services such as space planning for new residences, downsizing assistance, organizing belongings, coordinating with moving companies, managing timelines, and helping seniors adjust to new environments. They may visit both the current and future homes to assess space, take measurements, and create floor plans showing where furniture and items will fit. Many senior move managers also provide emotional support throughout the process, recognizing that moving can be stressful for older adults who may be leaving homes where they spent decades raising families or building memories.

The profession has grown significantly over the past two decades. According to the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM), founded in 2001, the field continues to expand as the aging population increases. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the population aged 65 and older is projected to reach 80 million by 2040, which has contributed to increased demand for these specialized services.

Senior move managers work in various situations. Some seniors move to smaller homes to reduce maintenance responsibilities. Others relocate to be closer to family members or to move into senior living communities such as active adult communities, assisted living facilities, or continuing care retirement communities. Some moves are planned years in advance, while others happen more quickly due to health changes or family circumstances.

Practical takeaway: Understanding what senior move managers do helps you determine whether this type of professional service might be useful for your situation. Consider whether you need help with planning, downsizing, coordinating logistics, or managing the emotional aspects of a move.

Types of Services Senior Move Managers Offer

Senior move managers provide a range of services that can be customized to individual needs. Some families use these professionals for comprehensive support from start to finish, while others hire them for specific tasks. The services available allow people to choose what level of support makes sense for their circumstances and budget.

Pre-move consultation is typically the first service. During this stage, a senior move manager meets with the client and family to discuss the reasons for the move, timeline, budget, and any special needs. They explain what the process will involve and answer questions about how they work. This consultation helps establish realistic expectations and allows the manager to recommend which additional services might be most beneficial.

Space planning and design services help seniors envision how their belongings will fit in a new, often smaller space. Managers use measurements and sometimes create detailed floor plans or 3D renderings showing furniture placement and room layouts. This is particularly valuable when moving from a multi-bedroom house to an apartment or smaller residence. Seeing these plans in advance helps seniors make decisions about what to keep, sell, or donate.

Downsizing and sorting services assist with the challenging task of deciding what to keep and what to let go of. A move manager can help organize items into categories: keep, sell, donate, or discard. They often have knowledge of what items have resale value and connections to local charities, consignment shops, and auction services. Some seniors find this process emotionally difficult after decades of accumulating possessions, and having professional support can make it more manageable.

Coordination services include scheduling movers, arranging for utility transfers, managing change-of-address notifications, and coordinating timing between move-out and move-in dates. Managers often serve as a single point of contact for multiple vendors, reducing the stress of juggling many phone calls and appointments. Some also arrange for items to be delivered to new homes and assist with unpacking and organizing belongings in the new space.

Estate sale and liquidation services help sell valuable items. Some senior move managers work with estate sale companies or conduct sales themselves. This can return money to seniors and families while finding homes for cherished items with people who will value them.

Specialized services may include helping seniors with accessibility modifications to new homes, arranging for furniture delivery and setup, finding new healthcare providers in the new location, and helping seniors become oriented to their new community.

Practical takeaway: List the specific challenges you face with a potential move, then look for senior move managers who offer services matching those particular needs. You don't need to use every service a manager offers.

How to Find a Qualified Senior Move Manager

Finding a qualified senior move manager involves research, asking questions, and comparing options. Because this is a relatively newer profession without universal licensing or certification requirements in most states, doing your homework is particularly important.

Start by searching online for senior move managers in your area. Use search terms like "senior move manager near me" or "relocation services for seniors [your city]." This will return local professionals and companies. The National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) maintains a directory of member professionals on its website at www.nasmm.org. Members commit to a code of ethics and participate in ongoing education, which provides some assurance of professionalism. You can search this directory by location to find members in your region.

Ask for referrals from people you know. Family members, friends, or neighbors who have gone through senior moves can provide valuable recommendations based on their actual experiences. Real estate agents, geriatric care managers, and senior living communities often work regularly with move managers and can provide trusted referrals. Some assisted living facilities and continuing care communities maintain lists of recommended professionals.

When you identify potential candidates, request information about their background and experience. Ask how long they've been in business, how many moves they've coordinated, and what types of moves they typically handle. Find out if they have any formal training or certifications. Some managers have completed NASMM certification, which involves training and passing an examination. Others may have backgrounds in real estate, interior design, or organization.

Request references from recent clients. A reputable manager should willingly provide contact information for several people they've worked with in the past year. When you call references, ask specific questions about their experience: Was the manager organized and responsive? Did the move happen on schedule and within budget? How did they handle unexpected problems? Would they recommend this person?

Get detailed information about pricing. Managers charge in different ways: hourly rates typically range from $50 to $150 per hour depending on location and experience; flat fees for specific projects; percentage-based fees calculated as a portion of the total value of items sold; or combinations of these methods. Ask for a written estimate that breaks down what's included and what costs extra. Understand what services are covered and what might result in additional charges.

Meet with at least two or three candidates in person before deciding. Use these meetings to assess whether you feel comfortable working with this person. Trust and communication are important since you'll be sharing personal information and decisions about your home and possessions.

Practical takeaway: Create a comparison chart listing several candidates with their experience, services offered, pricing, and reference feedback. This makes it easier to compare options side-by-side before making a decision.

Start with questions about their background and experience. Ask: How long have you been working as a senior move manager? How many moves have you coordinated? What types of moves do you typically handle—moves to smaller homes, to senior living communities, cross-country moves? Do you specialize in any particular situations? Have you worked with people in similar circumstances to mine?

Inquire about their process and what's included. Ask: How do you approach the initial planning stage? Will you visit both homes to assess the space? How do you help with the downsizing decision? What moving companies do you typically work with? Do you coordinate directly with the new facility if someone is moving to a senior living community? How involved are you on moving day itself? What happens after the move—will you help with unpacking and organizing?

Ask about problem-solving and flexibility. Ask: What's the biggest challenge you typically encounter, and how do you handle it? If a move needs to happen faster or slower than initially planned, how do you adjust? If we discover boxes
