Learn About Making International Calls From USA

Understanding International Calling Options From the United States

Making phone calls to people in other countries has become more affordable and convenient than it was just a decade ago. If you live in the United States and need to call someone abroad, you have several different methods to choose from, each with its own costs and features. Understanding what options exist helps you pick the approach that works best for your situation and budget.

The main ways to make international calls include using your regular cell phone or landline service, purchasing an international calling plan from your phone company, using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, or relying on internet-based messaging and calling apps. Each method has different pricing structures, quality levels, and requirements. Some work better for occasional calls, while others make sense if you call internationally several times per week.

Before choosing a method, think about how often you call internationally, which countries you contact most, and how important call quality is to you. Someone who calls their family in Canada once a month will probably make a different choice than someone who calls clients in India several times per week. The cost difference between methods can be significant, so spending a few minutes learning about your options can save you money over time.

Phone companies in the United States have very different rates for calls to different countries. Calls to Canada and Mexico might cost just a few cents per minute, while calls to some African or Asian countries can cost 50 cents to several dollars per minute. Your phone bill will show exactly which countries you called and how much each call cost, so you can track your spending.

Practical Takeaway: Before making your first international call, identify which country or countries you need to reach most often. This information will help you choose the most cost-effective method for your situation.

Traditional Phone Company International Calling Plans

Most major phone companies in the United States offer international calling plans as an add-on to your regular service. These plans come in different types: per-minute rates without a plan, monthly plans with a set cost, or pay-as-you-go options. Your existing phone company can tell you what plans they offer and what those plans cost.

With traditional phone company plans, you dial the country code followed by the phone number, just like making a regular call. The call connects through the regular phone network, which typically provides very clear sound quality and reliable connections. You don't need any special equipment or apps—you simply use your regular phone the way you always do.

The per-minute rates vary widely depending on which country you're calling. As of 2024, rates from major U.S. phone companies typically range from about 15 cents per minute to countries like the United Kingdom and Canada, to $1.00 or more per minute to countries in Africa, the Middle East, or parts of Asia. Some countries fall somewhere in between. A 20-minute call could cost anywhere from $3 to $20 or more depending on the destination.

Monthly plans work differently. Instead of paying by the minute, you pay a flat monthly fee (perhaps $5 to $15) and get either unlimited calling to certain countries or a large number of minutes per month. These plans make sense if you regularly call the same country. For example, if you call Mexico frequently, a $10 monthly plan with 500 minutes might cost less than paying $0.25 per minute for individual calls.

One advantage of traditional phone company plans is that you don't need internet service to make calls—they work over the regular phone network. If your internet connection is unreliable or slow, this matters. Another advantage is that emergency services might work differently on phone company lines compared to internet-based services.

Practical Takeaway: Contact your current phone company and ask for a list of their international rates to the countries you call most often. Compare the cost of pay-per-minute rates versus monthly plans to see which option costs less for your calling habits.

VoIP Services and Internet-Based Calling

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) means making phone calls using the internet instead of the traditional phone network. Many VoIP services offer much lower international rates than traditional phone companies. Popular VoIP services in the United States include Skype, Google Voice, Vonage, and Magicjack, among others.

With VoIP services, you need an internet connection to make calls. You can make calls from a computer using software, from a smartphone app, or through a special VoIP phone device connected to your internet router. The internet connection must be reasonably fast—even a basic home internet connection works fine for phone calls, but they do use some of your data.

VoIP services typically charge much less for international calls than traditional phone companies. As of 2024, rates on major VoIP platforms might be 2 to 10 cents per minute to many countries, which is substantially lower. Some VoIP services offer unlimited calling plans to specific countries for $5 to $15 per month. If you call internationally often, VoIP can cut your phone bill significantly.

The trade-off is that call quality depends on your internet speed. A strong internet connection produces clear calls, but if your connection is slow or unreliable, you might notice delays, dropped calls, or unclear audio. Some people notice a slight delay (called latency) where there's a pause between when someone speaks and when you hear them. This takes a bit of getting used to but usually isn't a problem for casual conversations.

To use a VoIP service, you typically create an account on the company's website and add money to pay for calls, similar to a prepaid phone account. Some services charge a small fee per month, while others charge only for the calls you make. You can usually see a history of all your calls and spending in your online account.

One thing to know is that VoIP services work differently than traditional phone lines if someone needs to call emergency services (911) from your line. You should check how emergency services work with the specific VoIP service you choose. Some services handle emergency calls, while others may not.

Practical Takeaway: If you have a fast, reliable home internet connection and make frequent international calls, exploring a VoIP service may reduce your monthly phone expenses substantially. Compare the rates of several VoIP providers for the countries you call most often.

Messaging and Calling Apps

Apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, and others allow you to make phone calls and send messages over the internet. If you have a smartphone and both you and the person you're calling have the same app installed, you can usually make calls for no additional cost beyond your regular internet service. This is often the cheapest option available.

These apps work over Wi-Fi or your mobile data plan. The call quality depends on your internet connection speed, just like VoIP services. For most people with decent internet, the quality is very good. These apps often include video calling as well, so you can see the person you're talking to.

The main limitation of messaging and calling apps is that both people need to have the same app and an internet connection. You can't call someone's regular phone number using most of these apps unless they also have the app. However, if you're calling friends or family members who already have smartphones, there's a good chance they use at least one of these apps.

Another advantage of these apps is that they typically work the same way everywhere in the world. You don't need to think about country codes or special dialing instructions—you simply find the person in your contacts and tap to call them. The app handles all the technical details automatically.

Some apps offer plans where you can call regular phone numbers (not just people with the app) at very low rates. WhatsApp, for instance, offers "WhatsApp Calls" to regular phone numbers in some countries at rates that are often cheaper than traditional phone companies. You would need to investigate whether this service is available for the countries you call.

These apps are generally free to download and use, though they require you to have an internet connection and a smartphone or computer. If you already use one of these apps for messaging, trying voice or video calls is as simple as tapping a button.

Practical Takeaway: Ask the people you call internationally which messaging or calling apps they use. If you share a common app like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Telegram, you may be able to make calls for no extra cost, making it the most economical option available.
