Learn About Finding Your Local APS Office
Understanding What APS Offices Do and Why They Matter
Adult Protective Services, commonly known as APS, is a government program that operates in every state. These offices investigate reports of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and abandonment of adults who cannot protect themselves. APS workers are trained to respond to situations where older adults or people with disabilities may be experiencing harm or living in unsafe conditions.

Each state runs its APS program differently, but the core mission remains the same: protecting vulnerable adults. APS offices employ social workers, investigators, and support staff who visit homes, interview people involved in concerning situations, and work to develop plans that keep people safe. Unlike child protective services, which focuses on minors, APS concentrates exclusively on adults aged 18 and older who are unable to care for themselves due to age, illness, or disability.
APS can intervene in many types of situations. These include cases where an older adult is not receiving needed medical care, where someone's money is being stolen by a caregiver, where an adult with an intellectual disability is being physically harmed, or where someone is living in dangerous conditions without adequate food or shelter. APS workers also help coordinate with other agencies like adult services, healthcare providers, and law enforcement when necessary.
Understanding what your local APS office does helps you know when and how to contact them. Whether you are concerned about a family member, a neighbor, or yourself, knowing that APS exists and what services they provide is an important first step. Each community's APS office serves as a safety net for adults who might otherwise have no one to turn to for protection.
Practical Takeaway: Learn the basic mission of APS in your state and understand that these offices focus on protecting vulnerable adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. This knowledge helps you recognize situations where contacting APS might be appropriate.
How to Search for Your Local APS Office Online
Finding your local APS office starts with an internet search. The most straightforward method is to search for "[Your State] Adult Protective Services" along with your county or city name. For example, searching "Adult Protective Services Los Angeles County" or "APS Maine" will typically return results for your regional office. State government websites usually list APS information prominently under the department of social services, department of aging, or similar agencies.

Each state structures its APS program under different government departments. In some states, APS falls under the Department of Social Services. In others, it may be part of the Department of Elder Affairs, Department of Health and Human Services, or a similar agency. Knowing your state's structure can help you navigate to the right office. You can find this information by searching for your state's official website and looking for pages related to aging services or adult protection.
Most state APS programs maintain websites that include contact information for local offices broken down by county or region. These websites typically provide phone numbers, addresses, and sometimes email contacts. Some state websites allow you to enter your zip code or county to find the nearest APS office. The information on these official state sites is usually current and reliable.
When searching online, look for the ".gov" domain extension in the website address, which indicates an official government site. Avoid websites that charge fees or claim to provide APS services, as legitimate APS offices are government programs and do not charge for their services. Be cautious of third-party websites that claim to connect you to APS but may actually be for-profit companies.
Social media platforms and online directories like Google Maps can also help you locate APS offices. Searching "Adult Protective Services near me" on Google Maps may show local APS office locations with phone numbers and hours. However, always verify the information by checking the official state government website to ensure accuracy.
Practical Takeaway: Start your search on your state's official government website by looking for "Adult Protective Services" combined with your location. Confirm any information you find by checking the ".gov" website to ensure you have current, accurate contact details.
Contacting Your APS Office: Phone, Mail, and In-Person Options
Once you locate your local APS office, you have several ways to contact them. The phone number is usually the fastest way to reach someone. Most APS offices have dedicated hotlines for reporting concerns about adults who may be experiencing abuse or neglect. When you call, you can describe your situation to a trained staff member who can determine whether APS should investigate or offer information about other resources that might help.

Phone lines at APS offices can sometimes have long wait times, especially during business hours. Many states offer 24-hour hotlines for emergencies, but routine inquiries may be handled during regular business hours. If you reach an automated system, listen to the menu options carefully. Often there will be a specific option for reporting abuse or neglect versus requesting information. Having the details of your situation ready before calling can help the conversation go more smoothly.
If you prefer not to call, many APS offices accept reports and inquiries by mail or through online forms. Sending information by mail can take longer to process, typically several days or weeks. However, this option works if you prefer written communication or if you cannot reach someone by phone. Find the mailing address for your local APS office on the state website and include clear, detailed information about your concern.
Some state APS programs now offer online reporting forms on their websites. These forms allow you to submit information about a situation of concern without making a phone call. Online forms can be convenient, but be aware that they may take longer to be reviewed and acted upon compared to a phone call. You may receive a case number or confirmation that your report was received.
Visiting an APS office in person is also an option, though it is less common than phone or online contact. If you need to meet with someone face-to-face, call ahead to schedule an appointment or ask about walk-in hours. Bringing any documentation related to your concern can be helpful during an in-person visit.
Practical Takeaway: Have your local APS office's phone number saved in your phone or written down for quick reference. Know that you can report concerns by phone, mail, or online form depending on what your state APS program offers.
What Information to Gather Before Contacting APS
Before you reach out to your local APS office, gathering relevant information will make your communication more effective. If you are concerned about a specific person, write down their name, age, and address. Include information about who lives with them and any family members or caregivers involved in their situation. This basic background helps APS workers understand the situation quickly.

Document what specific concerns prompted you to consider contacting APS. For example, if you think someone is being neglected, describe what you have observed. Are they not receiving medical care they need? Do they lack adequate food? Is their home unsafe or unclean in ways that pose health risks? Concrete examples are more useful than general statements. Note dates and times of specific incidents if possible, though exact dates are not always necessary.
If you are concerned about potential abuse or exploitation, collect details about that as well. Has someone been taking money from this person without permission? Has anyone hit, threatened, or emotionally mistreated them? Include the names of any people you believe may be causing harm. Explain why you think this person cannot protect themselves, whether due to age, illness, cognitive decline, or physical limitations.
Prepare information about yourself as well. Have your name, phone number, and relationship to the person you are concerned about ready to share. If you are a mandatory reporter, such as a healthcare worker or educator, mention that. However, note that many people can report concerns to APS without identifying themselves if they prefer to remain anonymous, though providing your information helps APS follow up with you if they need clarification.
If the person you are concerned about has other services involved in their life, that information can be useful. For instance, if they receive services from a home health agency, have a therapist, or are in a day program, mention these details. APS often coordinates with other service providers to address safety concerns.
Practical Takeaway: Before calling or contacting APS, write down the person's name and address, your specific concerns with examples, and your own contact information. This preparation helps the conversation move efficiently and gives APS the details they need to understand the situation.
