Learn About Colorado Driver's License Reinstatement Options
Understanding Colorado Driver's License Suspension and Revocation
A Colorado driver's license can be suspended or revoked for various reasons, and understanding the difference between these two statuses is important. A suspension is temporary—your license is taken away for a set period, after which you may be able to reinstate it. A revocation is more serious and permanent, meaning your license is cancelled and you must meet specific requirements before you can ever drive legally again in Colorado.

Common reasons for suspension in Colorado include unpaid traffic fines, failure to appear in court, accumulating too many points on your driving record, driving under the influence (DUI), or failure to maintain auto insurance. The Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles these administrative actions. According to Colorado law, a first-time DUI conviction typically results in a license suspension of at least one month, while subsequent offenses carry longer suspension periods and may result in revocation.
Points accumulate on your Colorado driving record when you're convicted of traffic violations. If you accumulate 12 points within a 12-month period, your license will be suspended for at least three months. Accumulating 18 points within 24 months results in a one-year suspension. These point-based suspensions are automatic and mandatory under Colorado's traffic safety laws.
Understanding why your license was suspended or revoked is the first step toward reinstatement. You can contact the Colorado DMV at (303) 205-5600 to learn the specific reason your driving privileges were suspended. Having this information helps you understand which reinstatement pathway applies to your situation and what steps you'll need to take. Different suspension reasons have different reinstatement procedures, fees, and requirements.
Practical takeaway: Contact the Colorado DMV directly to obtain your driving record and the exact reason for your suspension. Write down the suspension date, the reason, and any specific requirements mentioned by the DMV representative.
License Reinstatement After Traffic Violations and Point Accumulation
If your Colorado license was suspended due to traffic violations or accumulated points, the reinstatement process depends on how long your suspension period lasts. Most point-based suspensions are administrative suspensions that last a specific number of months. Once your suspension period ends, you may be able to reinstate your license relatively straightforwardly, though there are important steps you must follow.

For a first suspension due to point accumulation (12 points in 12 months), your license is typically suspended for three months from the suspension date. For a second suspension within 12 months, the suspension lasts one year. To reinstate after your suspension period expires, you must contact the Colorado DMV. As of 2024, Colorado charges a $95 reinstatement fee for most traffic-related suspensions. You'll need to provide proof that you've paid any outstanding fines or fees associated with your violations.
Before you can reinstate your license, you must clear all unpaid traffic fines and court costs. If you owe money from traffic citations, those debts must be resolved first. You can check your traffic record online through the Colorado DMV website, or you can call your local county court to inquire about any outstanding balances. Some courts offer payment plans if you cannot pay the full amount at once.
In some cases, Colorado may require you to take a written test or driving test before reinstatement, depending on the nature of your violations. This typically applies if your violations involved serious traffic safety issues. You can study for the written test using the Colorado Driver's Handbook, which is available free on the Colorado DMV website.
Practical takeaway: Once your suspension period ends, gather proof that you've paid all fines and court costs, prepare the $95 reinstatement fee, and contact the DMV to schedule your reinstatement. Keep records of all payments in case you need to provide documentation.
Reinstatement Options for DUI-Related License Suspension
DUI-related license suspensions in Colorado follow more complex rules than standard traffic violations because DUI convictions carry mandatory minimum suspension periods and additional requirements. Colorado law distinguishes between administrative suspension (which happens immediately after arrest) and criminal suspension (which follows a conviction).

If you were arrested for DUI in Colorado, the DMV may suspend your license administratively for at least one month, even before any court proceedings. If you are then convicted of DUI, a criminal suspension follows. A first DUI conviction in Colorado results in a license suspension of at least one month. A second DUI conviction within five years results in suspension of at least one year. A third or subsequent conviction within five years can result in a suspension of at least two years. Additionally, a fourth DUI offense within 10 years or any DUI offense with prior convictions dating back more than 10 years may result in revocation rather than suspension.
Before you can reinstate your license after a DUI suspension, you must complete several requirements. These typically include paying all fines and court costs, completing a DUI education program approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and submitting proof of SR-22 insurance (also called high-risk auto insurance). The SR-22 form proves to the state that you maintain continuous auto insurance coverage. You must carry SR-22 insurance for three years following reinstatement for a first offense, and longer for subsequent offenses.
The DUI education program is mandatory and cannot be waived. These programs, sometimes called DUID (Driving Under the Influence of Drugs/Alcohol), must be completed before you submit your reinstatement request. You'll receive a certificate upon completion, which you must include with your reinstatement paperwork. The cost of the education program typically ranges from $400 to $700, depending on the program provider. Many providers offer both in-person and online options.
Practical takeaway: After a DUI, enroll in an approved Colorado DUI education program first, obtain SR-22 insurance from your insurance company, pay all fines and court costs, then submit your reinstatement request with all required documentation to the Colorado DMV.
Reinstatement After License Revocation
License revocation is more serious than suspension and occurs when Colorado permanently cancels your driving privileges. However, revocation is not necessarily permanent—Colorado law provides pathways to petition for reinstatement after specific periods of time. The waiting period and requirements depend on why your license was revoked.

In Colorado, license revocation typically occurs after multiple DUI convictions, habitual traffic offender status, or certain serious moving violations. If you accumulate four DUI convictions within 10 years, or three DUI convictions within five years and one of those involved an accident or injury, your license may be revoked rather than suspended. Habitual traffic offender status means you've accumulated multiple serious violations within a set timeframe, and revocation follows. The waiting period before you can petition for reinstatement after revocation is typically one to five years, depending on the cause of revocation.
To petition for reinstatement after revocation, you must wait out the mandatory waiting period set by Colorado law. You cannot petition before this period expires. Once the waiting period has passed, you can submit a reinstatement petition to the Colorado DMV. The petition must demonstrate that you're capable of operating a vehicle safely and responsibly. You'll need to provide documentation showing compliance with all court-ordered requirements, proof of completion of any required education programs, evidence of stable employment or residence, and character references.
The DMV will review your petition and may grant, deny, or conditionally grant reinstatement. Conditional reinstatement might include requirements such as maintaining SR-22 insurance, taking an advanced driving course, submitting to random drug testing, or installing an ignition interlock device in your vehicle. An ignition interlock device requires you to blow into a breathalyzer before your car will start—this prevents anyone who has consumed alcohol from operating the vehicle. If your petition is denied, you can reapply after one year has passed.
Practical takeaway: If your license was revoked, note the revocation date and determine your state-imposed waiting period. One to two years before that period ends, begin gathering documentation showing your efforts toward stability and safety compliance.
The Reinstatement Process and Required Documentation
The Colorado DMV reinstatement process involves specific steps and required documents. Understanding exactly what you need to submit prevents delays and rejection of your reinstatement request. The documentation requirements vary slightly depending on your suspension reason, but certain items are always necessary.
