How to Use Incognito Mode in Your Browser

What Incognito Mode Is and How It Works

Incognito mode is a privacy feature built into most web browsers that changes how your browser stores information about your online activity. When you use incognito mode, your browser does not save your browsing history, cookies, site data, or information you enter into forms. This means that after you close an incognito window or tab, the browser forgets what websites you visited and what you did on those sites.

Every major browser offers this feature under different names. Google Chrome calls it "Incognito mode." Mozilla Firefox refers to it as "Private Browsing." Microsoft Edge uses "InPrivate browsing." Safari on Apple devices calls it "Private Browsing." Opera browser has "Private window." Despite the different names, these features work on similar principles—they create a temporary browsing session that does not create a permanent record on your device.

When you open an incognito window, your browser starts with a blank slate. It does not load saved passwords, autofill information, or your browsing history. Websites you visit in incognito mode cannot track your activity across different sites using cookies in the same way they might in a regular browsing session. However, it is important to understand that incognito mode has specific limitations. Your internet service provider (ISP) can still see which websites you visit. Your employer or school network administrator can see your activity if you are using their network. Websites themselves can still collect information about you through other methods, such as requiring you to log into an account.

The practical takeaway: Use incognito mode when you want your device to stop recording what you do online, but understand that it does not make you completely anonymous to all parties.

How to Open Incognito Mode in Different Browsers

Opening incognito mode is a quick process that takes just a few seconds in any major browser. The exact steps vary slightly depending on which browser you use, but the concept remains the same—you access the browser menu and select the incognito or private browsing option.

In Google Chrome on a computer, you can open incognito mode by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac. Alternatively, click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner of your browser window. From the menu that appears, select "New incognito window." A new window will open with a dark theme and an incognito icon, typically showing a spy or detective figure. On mobile devices running Chrome, open the app and tap the three horizontal lines at the bottom right, then select "New incognito tab."

Mozilla Firefox users can press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Command+Shift+P on Mac to open a private window. On Firefox's menu, click the three horizontal lines and select "New Private Window." Mobile Firefox users should tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) and choose "New Private Tab." Microsoft Edge uses Ctrl+Shift+P on both Windows and Mac. You can also click the three dots in the upper right corner and select "New InPrivate window." Safari users on Mac should press Command+Shift+N or go to File menu and select "New Private Window." On iPhone or iPad, tap the tabs icon at the bottom right and switch to Private tabs by tapping "Private" at the bottom left.

The practical takeaway: Most browsers use Ctrl+Shift+N or Command+Shift+N as a keyboard shortcut for incognito mode, making it a quick action across platforms.

What Incognito Mode Does and Does Not Save

Understanding exactly what incognito mode saves and what it does not save helps you use it effectively. When you browse in incognito mode, your browser does not retain several types of information. Your browsing history disappears when you close the incognito window—websites you visited will not show up in your history list. Cookies and site data are not stored on your device. This means websites cannot use stored cookies to recognize you or remember your preferences from one visit to the next. Form data you type into website fields, such as email addresses or search queries, is not saved. Passwords you enter are not stored by the browser, though websites may still remember you if you log into an account.

However, several things still happen in incognito mode that you should know about. Downloads you make are saved to your device's download folder and appear in your download history, even in incognito mode. If you create bookmarks or add items to reading lists, these persist after you close the incognito window. Files you save or create remain on your device. Your internet service provider sees the websites you visit regardless of incognito mode. Your employer or school network administrator can see your activity if you are on their network. Websites can still collect information about you if you log into an account, and your activity may be associated with that account.

Real-world example: If you search for a product in incognito mode and then close the window, you will not see that search in your browser history or receive recommendations for that product based on browser cookies. However, if you purchased that product using a logged-in account, the purchase and your activity may still be associated with your account profile.

The practical takeaway: Incognito mode removes local traces of your activity from your device, but it does not hide your activity from network administrators, ISPs, or websites that you log into.

Situations Where Incognito Mode Is Useful

There are many practical scenarios where using incognito mode serves a legitimate purpose. One common use is shopping online. When you browse for products in incognito mode, you avoid having websites track your interests and target you with ads for those products across the internet. This can be helpful when you are shopping for gifts and do not want the recipient to see ads that might spoil the surprise. Real-world example: If you are buying a birthday gift for someone who uses your shared computer, browsing in incognito mode means product ads for that gift will not appear when that person uses the browser.

Another frequent use is accessing accounts on shared devices. If you are using a public computer at a library, internet café, or shared family computer, incognito mode ensures that your login information and account details are not stored on that device. After you close the incognito window, no one else using that device will be able to access your email, social media, banking, or other accounts through browser memory.

Incognito mode is also valuable for privacy on household devices. If you share a computer with family members and want to keep certain searches or website visits private, incognito mode prevents those activities from appearing in the shared browser history. This might include researching health conditions, looking for job opportunities, researching sensitive topics, or personal projects you prefer to keep private.

Testing websites is another practical application. Web developers and designers often use incognito mode to test websites as a new visitor would experience them, without the browser loading saved preferences, login information, or cached versions of pages.

The practical takeaway: Use incognito mode when you want to keep your local browsing activity private from others using your device or when you want to prevent websites from tracking your interests through cookies.

Understanding the Limitations and Risks of Incognito Mode

While incognito mode offers a level of privacy on your device, it has significant limitations that users should understand. The most important limitation is that incognito mode does not make you anonymous on the internet. Your internet service provider maintains records of every website you visit, regardless of incognito mode. They can see the domain names of sites you access, the timing and duration of your visits, and data usage. Your ISP typically keeps this information for months or years for billing and network management purposes.

When you are on a workplace or school network, network administrators can see all your internet activity, including websites visited in incognito mode. These organizations typically run monitoring software that logs network traffic at a level beyond what the browser controls. If you are concerned about privacy on a network you do not control, incognito mode will not protect you.

Websites themselves can identify you and track your activity in several ways that incognito mode does not prevent. If you log into any account while in incognito mode, the website knows who you are and can track your activity on that site. Your computer has a unique device fingerprint based on your browser version, screen resolution, fonts installed, and other characteristics. Websites can use this fingerprinting to identify you even without cookies. Your IP address remains visible and can be used to identify your general location and internet provider.
