How to Send a Text Message Guide

Understanding Text Message Basics

A text message, also called an SMS (Short Message Service), is a written communication sent from one mobile phone to another through a cellular network. Unlike email or social media, text messages are transmitted through your phone's built-in messaging system and typically arrive within seconds. Text messages have been a standard feature on mobile phones since 1992, when the first SMS was sent between computers. Today, over 23 billion text messages are sent daily in the United States alone.

Text messages differ from other forms of communication in several important ways. They use less data than apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, making them reliable even on slower networks. A standard text message can contain up to 160 characters, though most modern phones allow you to send longer messages that are automatically split into multiple parts. When you send a message longer than 160 characters, your phone typically combines it into one message on the recipient's end, but your carrier may charge for multiple messages.

Every mobile phone with a cellular plan includes text messaging capability. You do not need to purchase additional software or pay extra fees for standard text messaging—it's included as part of most cellular plans. Some plans offer unlimited texting, while others may charge per message. International text messages operate differently and typically cost extra, ranging from 25 cents to $1.00 per message depending on your carrier and destination country.

Text messages are stored on your phone in a dedicated messaging application. On Android phones, common messaging apps include Google Messages or Samsung Messages. On iPhones, the app is called Messages. These apps organize conversations by contact, allowing you to view your entire exchange with one person in chronological order. Most modern phones store hundreds or thousands of text messages, though storage depends on your phone's memory capacity.

Practical Takeaway: Before sending your first text, confirm your phone plan includes text messaging and understand whether you have a per-message charge or an unlimited plan. Check your phone's messaging app to understand how conversations are organized on your specific device.

Locating and Opening Your Phone's Messaging App

Every smartphone includes a built-in messaging application, though its location and appearance varies by phone type. On an iPhone, look for the green speech bubble icon on your home screen labeled "Messages." On Android phones, look for an icon that resembles a speech bubble or envelope. Some Android phones use Google Messages (white icon with a blue speech bubble), while others use Samsung Messages or another manufacturer's version. If you cannot find the messaging app on your home screen, swipe left to access additional screens or use your phone's search function.

To use your phone's search function: On an iPhone, swipe down from the top of your home screen and type "Messages." On Android, swipe down from the top twice to access search, then type "Messages." The messaging app should appear in the results. Tap it to open the application. If the app does not appear, it may be pre-installed but hidden in a folder. Look for a folder labeled "Utilities," "Tools," or "Google" and open it to find your messaging app.

When you open your messaging app for the first time, you will see a screen displaying your conversations. If you have never sent a text before, this list will be empty. The exact layout depends on your phone type. iPhone users see a "Messages" header at the top with a pencil icon in the corner to compose new messages. Android users typically see a floating circle button with a pencil or plus sign at the bottom of the screen. In both cases, this button allows you to start a new conversation.

Some phones allow you to customize which messaging app you use as your default. This is the app that opens when you click a phone number or receive incoming text messages. To check or change your default messaging app on an iPhone, open Settings, select "Apps" or "Messages," and confirm Messages is set as default. On Android, open Settings, select "Apps" or "Default Apps," and select your preferred messaging application. Most users keep their phone's native messaging app as the default.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your phone's messaging app icon and test opening it. Familiarize yourself with the layout of your specific phone's messaging application so you know where to find the button to compose new messages.

Composing and Addressing Your First Message

To compose a new text message, open your messaging app and tap the compose button. On iPhones, this is a pencil icon in the top right corner. On Android, this is typically a floating circle button at the bottom of the screen. Once you tap this button, a new message composition screen will appear with blank fields for entering the recipient's phone number or name and your message text.

The first step is addressing your message to the correct recipient. You have two options: enter a phone number or select a contact from your phone's address book. To enter a phone number directly, tap the "To" field and type the recipient's 10-digit phone number. In the United States, phone numbers follow the format (###) ###-####, though you can typically type just the 10 digits without parentheses or dashes. Your phone will automatically format the number correctly. If you are texting someone outside the United States, you will need to include the country code before their phone number.

Alternatively, you can select a contact from your address book. Tap the "To" field and start typing the person's name. Your phone will display matching contacts, and you can tap the person you want to message. This method is more reliable because it uses your stored contact information rather than relying on manual number entry. If the person has multiple phone numbers in your contacts (home, work, mobile), your phone may ask which number you want to use. Select the appropriate phone number, usually the mobile number for text messaging.

You can send one message to multiple people by adding multiple recipients in the "To" field. On iPhones, this creates a group message where all recipients see each other's responses. On Android, this typically sends individual messages to each recipient, and they do not see responses from others. The behavior differs between phone types and messaging apps, so test with one additional recipient first to understand how your phone handles multiple recipients.

Practical Takeaway: Practice addressing a message by either typing a phone number from memory or selecting a contact name from your address book. Confirm your phone displays the correct recipient before typing your message content.

Writing and Sending Your Message

After addressing your message, tap the text field where it says "Message" or shows a text entry area. Begin typing your message using your phone's keyboard. On iPhones, you will see the standard QWERTY keyboard with letters arranged like a computer keyboard. On Android phones, the keyboard layout is similar, though some older Android devices may default to a T9 predictive text system where each number key corresponds to multiple letters.

As you type, your phone's keyboard may suggest words to complete what you are typing. These suggestions appear above the keyboard. On iPhones, this feature is called predictive text or QuickType. On Android, this is called predictive text or next-word prediction. To accept a suggested word, tap it. To ignore suggestions and continue typing your own words, simply keep typing. You can disable these suggestions in your phone's Settings under Keyboard or Text Input if you prefer to type without suggestions.

Text messages accommodate various types of content beyond letters and numbers. You can include numbers, punctuation, spaces, and special characters. Most keyboards display numbers at the top row, and you tap them like letter keys. To access punctuation and symbols, look for a key labeled ".?123" on the keyboard and tap it to reveal additional characters. On some keyboards, long-pressing certain keys reveals additional character options—for example, long-pressing "e" might show "é" or "ë."

When your message is complete, tap the send button. On iPhones, this is typically a blue upward arrow or the word "Send" on the right side of the text field. On Android, this is usually a blue arrow or paper plane icon. Once you tap send, your phone displays a brief confirmation, and the message transmits through your cellular network. The recipient's phone will receive your message within seconds under normal network conditions. Your message will appear in your conversation history with a timestamp showing when you sent it.

Practical Takeaway: Compose a practice message to yourself or a trusted friend. Review the message before sending to confirm spelling and clarity. Send the message and note how quickly it arrives on the recipient's phone.
