How to Remove Apps From Your Phone or Computer

Understanding Why You Might Remove Apps

Apps take up space on your phone or computer, and over time you may collect programs you no longer use. Removing unused apps can help your device run faster and free up storage space for things you actually need. According to recent data, the average smartphone user has between 80 and 100 apps installed, but only uses about 30 of them regularly. Many people find that deleting apps they haven't opened in months makes their devices noticeably more responsive.

Storage space matters more than many realize. When your phone or computer gets full, it has to work harder to manage files, which can slow down performance. A device running at 90 percent capacity may take longer to open apps, save photos, or install updates compared to one that has 30 percent free space available. Removing apps you don't use is one of the fastest ways to reclaim this storage.

Beyond storage, removing apps also reduces clutter in your user experience. If you have 15 pages of apps and can only name 10 of them, cleaning out unused programs makes finding the apps you actually use much faster. Some apps also run background processes even when you're not actively using them, which can drain battery life on mobile devices.

Practical takeaway: Before removing anything, think about which apps you haven't opened in the past month. Those are typically the first candidates for removal.

How to Remove Apps From iPhones and iPads

Apple devices offer several methods to remove apps depending on which version of iOS or iPadOS you're running. The most straightforward method works on all modern iPhones and iPads: find the app on your home screen, press and hold it until a menu appears, then select "Remove App." A second menu will ask you to confirm. You'll have the option to remove the app while keeping its data in iCloud, or to remove the app completely along with its data.

Another method involves going to your Settings app. Open Settings, tap "General," then select "iPhone Storage" or "iPad Storage." This screen shows all your installed apps ranked by how much space they take up. You can see exactly how much storage each app uses. Tap on any app and you'll see a "Offload App" button or a "Delete App" button. Offloading removes the app but keeps your data, while deletion removes everything.

For those who prefer a third method, you can go directly to the App Store, tap your profile picture in the upper right corner, select "Manage" under "Apps and Subscriptions," look for the app you want to remove, and tap "Edit" followed by "Delete App." This method is particularly useful if you want to review all your subscriptions at the same time you're removing apps.

One important distinction: removing an app from your home screen is different from actually deleting it. If you simply hold down an app icon and select "Remove from Home Screen," the app is still installed on your device taking up storage space. You must select "Remove App" instead to actually delete it.

Practical takeaway: If you're unsure whether you want to permanently delete an app, use the "Offload App" option instead. This frees up storage space but saves your settings and data in case you want to reinstall it later.

How to Remove Apps From Android Phones and Tablets

Android devices, which include phones from Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, and many other manufacturers, remove apps through similar but slightly different methods than iPhones. The most common way is to find the app in your app drawer or on your home screen, press and hold the app icon until options appear, then select "Uninstall" or "Remove." A confirmation message will appear asking if you're sure you want to remove the app.

You can also remove apps through your Settings menu. Go to Settings, then look for "Apps," "Application Manager," or "Manage Applications" depending on your device manufacturer. This will show a list of all installed apps on your device. Tap the app you want to remove, and you should see an "Uninstall" button. Tap it and confirm your choice.

Some Android devices, particularly Samsung phones, have their own app called "Galaxy Store" or similar that functions like Apple's App Store. You can open this store, find the app you want to remove, and select an uninstall option from within the store's interface.

It's worth noting that many Android devices come with pre-installed apps you cannot remove. These are called "system apps" or "bloatware." While you cannot delete them, many phones allow you to "disable" them instead, which prevents them from running and hides them from your app drawer, essentially freeing up resources. To disable an app, go to Settings, find the app in your Apps list, and look for a "Disable" button.

Practical takeaway: If you see an uninstall button grayed out or missing for an app you don't want, that's likely a system app your phone requires to function properly. Disabling it instead of deleting it is the safer option.

How to Remove Programs From Windows Computers

Windows computers store their programs differently than phones, and removing them requires access to your system settings. The standard method works on Windows 10 and Windows 11: click the Start menu, type "Add or remove programs," and open that settings panel. This displays a list of all the software installed on your computer. Find the program you want to remove and click on it, then select "Uninstall." Windows will walk you through the removal process, which typically takes just a few clicks.

Some older or more specialized programs may have their own uninstaller tool. You can often find this in your Start menu under the program's folder, or in the program's installation folder within "Program Files." Look for an executable file called "Uninstall" and run it. This launches the program's built-in removal tool, which may ask specific questions about how thoroughly you want to remove the software.

For programs that don't have a dedicated uninstaller, you can use third-party uninstaller software like Revo Uninstaller or CCleaner. These programs scan your computer for all traces of software and can remove not just the main program but also leftover files and registry entries that the standard uninstaller might miss. However, the built-in Windows uninstaller handles most programs adequately for everyday users.

A word of caution: some software is essential for your Windows system to function properly. Before removing any program, make sure it's not a Windows component. If you're unsure whether a program is safe to remove, search the program's name online before uninstalling it.

Practical takeaway: After uninstalling a program through the standard method, restart your computer to ensure all connections to that program are completely severed.

How to Remove Programs From Mac Computers

Mac computers typically store applications in the Applications folder, and removal is usually simpler than on Windows. The easiest method is to open Finder, navigate to Applications, find the program you want to remove, and drag it to the Trash. Once you've moved it to Trash, empty the Trash to permanently delete it. Some applications may be completely removed this way, while others might leave behind small preference files in your user library.

For a more thorough removal, you can use Finder to access hidden files. Press Command + Shift + Period to show hidden files, then navigate to your user's Library folder. Here you can search for folders related to the program you're removing, such as folders in "Library/Application Support" or "Library/Preferences," and move those to Trash as well. This ensures no lingering files remain on your system taking up space.

Alternatively, many Macs come with an Uninstaller application within the program's own folder. Open the Applications folder, right-click on the program you want to remove, select "Show Package Contents," and look for an uninstaller option. Some programs also provide an uninstaller in their main application folder that you can double-click to run.

For more comprehensive removal of stubborn programs or preference files, third-party Mac uninstallers like AppCleaner or CleanMyMac are available. These scan your system for all files related to a program and remove them together. However, the basic drag-to-Trash method works well for standard applications.

Practical takeaway: If you want to keep your Mac running smoothly, periodically empty your Trash folder. Deleted files remain on your computer taking up space
