How to Change Your Hertz Car Rental Reservation

Understanding Hertz Reservation Changes and Modification Options

Hertz offers several ways to change your car rental reservation after you've booked it. Before diving into the specific steps, it helps to understand what types of changes are possible and what information you'll need on hand. When you make a reservation with Hertz, you receive a confirmation number—this is the key piece of information needed for most modifications. Your confirmation number appears in your confirmation email and typically starts with letters followed by numbers.

Changes to your reservation can include modifying your rental dates, switching your pickup or return location, upgrading or downgrading your vehicle class, and adjusting the number of drivers. Some changes may incur additional fees if they result in a higher rate, while others might actually lower your total cost. Hertz's modification policies are generally flexible compared to some competitors, though specific terms depend on the rate type you selected when booking.

The timing of your change matters in some cases. Changes made well in advance of your rental date typically process more smoothly than those made close to your pickup date. Hertz processes modifications differently depending on whether you book through their website, mobile app, phone, or through a travel agency. Each channel has slightly different procedures, though the end result is the same.

It's important to note that certain promotional rates or prepaid deals may have restrictions on changes. If you booked a non-refundable rate, modifications might still be possible, but changing dates or locations could result in fees or rate adjustments. Reading the terms associated with your specific rate type before attempting changes can prevent surprises.

Practical takeaway: Locate your confirmation number and review the rate terms from your original booking email before attempting any modifications. This preparation makes the change process faster and helps you understand potential fees.

Modifying Your Reservation Through the Hertz Website

The Hertz website provides a straightforward method for changing most reservation details without needing to contact customer service. To begin, visit hertz.com and look for the "Manage My Reservation" or "Change Reservation" option, typically found on the homepage. You'll need to enter your confirmation number and either your last name or the email address associated with the booking.

Once you've accessed your reservation through the website, you'll see a summary of your current booking details including rental dates, locations, vehicle type, and pricing. The website displays which elements you can modify directly. For most reservations, you can change your pickup and return dates by selecting new dates on a calendar. The system updates your rate in real time, showing you the new total cost before you confirm the change.

When changing locations through the website, Hertz shows you available branches at different locations. This is particularly useful if you need to pick up in one city and return in another. The website indicates whether each location has availability for your desired dates. You can also modify the vehicle class by selecting a different car type from the available options for your new dates.

The website process typically takes 5-10 minutes and provides immediate confirmation. You receive a new confirmation email reflecting your updated reservation. One advantage of using the website is that you can see pricing changes instantly, allowing you to compare costs before committing to the modification. If the change results in a lower rate, Hertz applies the savings to your reservation. If it costs more, you're asked to authorize the additional charge.

Practical takeaway: Use the Hertz website for changes you want to make at your own pace. The real-time price display helps you understand the financial impact of your modifications before confirming them.

Using the Hertz Mobile App to Adjust Your Reservation

The Hertz mobile app, available for both iPhone and Android devices, allows you to manage reservations on the go. The app's reservation management features are comparable to the website, with the added convenience of access from your phone. To access your reservation in the app, open it and look for a "Manage Reservation" or "My Bookings" section, usually found in the main menu or tab bar at the bottom of the screen.

Enter your confirmation number and identifying information just as you would on the website. The app displays your current reservation with the same modification options available through the web interface. The mobile app interface is designed for phone screens, making it sometimes easier to navigate on smaller devices than scrolling through a website version.

A key benefit of using the app is receiving push notifications about your reservation. If you modify dates or locations through the app, Hertz can send you confirmations and reminders about your upcoming rental. The app also stores your Gold Plus Rewards information if you're a member, potentially showing you member-specific rates when you make changes.

The app includes features for uploading your driver's license and insurance information ahead of time, which can speed up your check-in process at the rental counter. While modifying your reservation details, the app may also show you add-on options like GPS, additional drivers, or equipment rental. These can be added or removed during the same modification session.

One consideration is that app performance can vary depending on your phone's operating system version and your internet connection. If you experience technical issues using the app, switching to the website on your phone's web browser is often a reliable alternative.

Practical takeaway: Download the Hertz app before your rental date so you can quickly access and modify your reservation using your phone, whether at home or while traveling.

Contacting Hertz Customer Service for Complex Changes

Some reservation changes require speaking with a Hertz representative, particularly if your situation is complex or if online systems won't accommodate what you need. Hertz provides customer service through multiple channels, with phone support being the most direct option for immediate assistance. The main Hertz customer service number is 1-800-654-3131, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Having your confirmation number ready before calling significantly speeds up the process.

When you call, explain your situation to the representative clearly and concisely. For example, if you need to change your rental from a one-way trip to a round trip, or if you want to add multiple additional drivers, representatives can often process these changes more efficiently than online systems. Representatives also handle situations where your original rate has expired or where special circumstances apply to your booking.

Hertz also provides customer service through email, though this method typically takes 24-48 hours for a response. You can initiate email contact through their website. Email is useful for complex questions where you want written confirmation of the response, though it's slower than calling or using the website for time-sensitive changes.

If you booked through a travel agent, contacting your agent may be another option, as they can sometimes make changes directly in their booking system and have established relationships with Hertz. Travel agency bookings sometimes have different modification procedures than direct bookings, so clarifying this with your agent is worthwhile.

The average wait time to speak with a Hertz representative varies by time of day and day of week, with shorter waits typically during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening). Speaking with a representative allows you to discuss multiple changes at once and understand the financial impact of each change before committing.

Practical takeaway: Call Hertz customer service at 1-800-654-3131 when your change is complicated or when you want to make multiple modifications at once. Have your confirmation number and rental dates ready before calling.

Understanding Fees, Rates, and Financial Implications of Changes

Modifying your Hertz reservation can affect your total cost in various ways. The most common scenario is a rate change. If you move your rental dates to a period with lower demand, your daily rate may decrease, resulting in overall savings. Conversely, changing to peak travel dates may increase your rate. Hertz automatically applies the current rate for your new dates, which may differ substantially from your original rate.

Location changes also affect pricing. Returning a car to a different location than originally planned sometimes includes a drop-off fee, typically ranging from $10 to $50 depending on the locations involved. Some location combinations have no additional drop-off fee. The online system or representative can inform you of any drop-off fees before you confirm a location change.

Vehicle class changes follow a straightforward principle: upgrading to a larger or more premium vehicle increases your cost, while downgrading reduces it. Hertz calculates the price difference and either charges you or credits you accordingly. This calculation is based on the daily rates for each vehicle class during your rental period.
