How to Add Members to Your Amazon Prime Account

Understanding Amazon Prime Household Members

Amazon Prime allows account holders to share their membership with other people in their household. This feature lets multiple people in the same home watch Prime Video, use Prime Music, access Prime Reading, and enjoy other Prime benefits without each person needing their own paid subscription. Understanding how this works is the first step in setting up shared access.

A Prime household can include up to two adults and up to four children or teens under 18 years old. Each adult has their own login credentials and can manage the household independently. Children and teens have their own profiles but operate under the adult's account structure. This means both adults can purchase items, watch content, and manage household settings, though they maintain separate viewing histories and recommendations.

The household feature differs from simply sharing a password. When you add someone to your Prime household, Amazon recognizes them as an official member with their own profile and viewing experience. This separation means their watch history, reading lists, and music preferences don't mix with yours. If one household member finishes watching a show, it won't affect where another member is in that same show.

Location matters for Prime households. Amazon requires that all household members live at the same address. The account holder must verify this address, and members added to the household should be receiving mail at that location. Amazon occasionally confirms that household members are still at the registered address, so it's important that the information remains current.

Household membership also affects Prime shipping benefits. When a household member orders something using Prime shipping, it counts toward the same account. This means shared benefits apply, including two-day or faster shipping on eligible items, depending on your Prime membership level and location.

Practical takeaway: Before adding members, confirm that everyone involved lives at the same address and understand that up to two adults can manage the account independently, while children and teens will have supervised profiles.

Step-by-Step Process for Adding Adult Members

Adding another adult to your Amazon Prime household involves several straightforward steps through your account settings. Start by signing into your Amazon account and navigating to "Account & Lists" in the top right corner. From there, select "Your Account." Look for the "Login & security" section, which contains settings related to who can access your account and household features.

Within account settings, find the "Household" or "Prime Household" section. The exact location varies slightly depending on whether you're using a computer, smartphone, or tablet, but it's typically found under account management settings. Once you locate this section, you'll see an option to add a new household member. Select this option to begin the process.

Amazon will ask you to enter the email address or phone number associated with the other adult's Amazon account. This person must already have an Amazon account before you can add them. If they don't have one, they'll need to create an account first using their own email address or phone number. This ensures each adult has separate login credentials and personal account information.

After you enter their contact information, Amazon sends an invitation to that person. They receive a notification asking them to confirm that they want to join your household. This confirmation step is a security feature—it prevents someone from being added to a household without their knowledge. The other adult must accept the invitation for the process to complete. Until they accept, they're not officially part of the household.

Once the other adult accepts the invitation, both of you can immediately start using Prime benefits. You can both access Prime Video, browse and purchase items with Prime shipping, use Prime Music, and participate in other Prime perks. Each of you maintains your own purchase history, wish lists, and preferences. If either adult leaves the household, their access to Prime benefits through that account ends, though they can maintain their own individual Prime membership if they have one.

Practical takeaway: Adding an adult requires their existing Amazon account, an invitation they must accept, and confirmation that you live at the same address. The process typically takes just a few minutes once the invitation is sent and accepted.

Adding Teens and Children to Your Household

Amazon offers different options for adding younger household members. For children under 13 and teens aged 13-17, the process differs from adding adults, and parental controls come into play. If you're adding a child under 13, you cannot simply add their existing Amazon account to your household. Instead, you'll create a child profile through the household settings. This profile is managed by the parent or guardian account.

To add a child profile, go to your Household settings and select the option to add a child. Amazon asks you to name the profile and confirm the child's birth date. You don't need an email address or password for a child under 13—the account holder manages everything. The child can use this profile to watch age-appropriate content on Prime Video, listen to music on Prime Music, and read books on Prime Reading, with restrictions set by the parent.

For teens aged 13 to 17, you have two options. You can create a teen profile similar to a child profile, which allows you to set parental controls and approve purchases. Alternatively, if the teen already has their own Amazon account, you might be able to add them directly to the household, depending on your region and Amazon's current policies. Creating a teen profile gives you more control, while adding their existing account gives them more independence within set boundaries.

Parental controls are built into child and teen profiles. As the account holder, you can restrict which movies and TV shows are available based on content ratings, set spending limits for purchases, and control which apps and features the child can use. You can also view their watch history to see what content they're accessing. These controls are designed to let younger members enjoy Prime benefits while parents maintain oversight.

When a child or teen reaches adulthood (typically at 18 years old), their profile can transition to a full adult account if they remain in the household. Amazon handles this transition automatically or provides instructions for completing it. This ensures they maintain their profile history while gaining the independence of an adult account.

Practical takeaway: Children under 13 require parent-managed profiles with no separate login, while teens 13-17 can have supervised profiles with parental controls. Both options restrict content based on age and allow parents to monitor activity and manage spending.

Managing and Modifying Household Settings

Once members are added to your Prime household, you can adjust various settings related to how the household operates. The household management section in your account settings contains options to modify member roles, update information, and manage access permissions. These settings allow the account holder to maintain control while accommodating the needs of different household members.

You can change which adult in the household has what permissions. For example, both adults in the household can typically manage purchases and Prime benefits, but you might adjust settings so that one adult handles subscriptions while the other manages content permissions for children. These role adjustments depend on your preferences and household structure. Some households prefer one primary account holder, while others prefer equal management responsibilities.

The address associated with your Prime household can be updated if you move. This is important because Amazon occasionally confirms that members live at the registered address. If you relocate, update your household address in account settings as soon as possible. All household members must still live at the address listed in your account. If someone moves, they should be removed from the household and potentially added to a new household associated with their new address.

You can view who is currently in your household through the household settings page. This list shows all adults and children or teens associated with your account, along with their email addresses or profile names. Regularly reviewing this list helps ensure that only current household members have access to your Prime benefits. If someone no longer lives with you, remove them from the household to prevent unauthorized use of your account.

Device management is another important household feature. You can see which devices are registered to your account and which household members are using them. For security purposes, you can remove devices or adjust who can use them. If a household member takes a device with them when they leave, you can remove that device from your household to maintain account security.

Practical takeaway: Household settings allow you to adjust member permissions, update your address, review who has access, and manage registered devices. Regular review of these settings helps maintain account security and ensures that only current household members retain access to Prime benefits.

Troubleshooting Common Household Setup Issues

When adding members to your Prime household, certain issues may arise. One common problem occurs when the person you're trying to add doesn't have an Amazon account yet. The solution is straightforward: have them create a free Amazon account first using their email address
