How to Add a Checked Bag to Southwest Flight App

Understanding Southwest Airlines Baggage Policy and the Mobile App

Southwest Airlines allows passengers to bring two checked bags at no charge, which is a key difference from many other airlines. The first and second checked bags fly free for most passengers, though some restrictions apply based on your ticket type and frequent flyer status. To manage your bags through Southwest's system, you'll use their mobile application, which works on both iPhone and Android devices.

The Southwest Airlines app serves as your primary tool for booking, managing, and modifying your flight reservations. Within this app, you can add checked baggage to your reservation, track your bags during travel, and view your baggage allowance. The app also shows your boarding position and provides real-time flight information. Understanding how the baggage system works within the app will help you navigate the process smoothly.

Most passengers can add their first two checked bags without paying additional fees. However, third bags and beyond will incur charges. The app clearly displays how many free checked bags you're entitled to based on your ticket class and frequent flyer status. A Rapid Rewards member, for example, may receive different baggage benefits than a non-member on the same flight.

Practical takeaway: Before starting the baggage addition process, review your specific ticket to understand how many free checked bags come with your purchase. This information appears in your reservation details within the app.

Locating Your Reservation in the Southwest App

To add a checked bag, you first need to find your reservation in the Southwest app. Open the application and look for the "My Trips" section, which typically appears on the home screen or in the main navigation menu. This section displays all of your upcoming reservations with Southwest Airlines. If you have multiple reservations, you can scroll through them to find the flight you want to modify.

You can search for your reservation in several ways. If you booked through the app, it may automatically appear in your "My Trips" section. If you booked through the website or purchased a ticket at the airport, you may need to add your reservation manually. To do this, you'll need your confirmation number and last name. The confirmation number appears on your email receipt when you booked your flight. You can also find it on your boarding pass or by checking your email for the booking confirmation from Southwest.

Once you've located the correct reservation, tap on it to view all the details. The app will show your flight dates, departure and arrival cities, current number of passengers, and available modification options. Make sure you've selected the right flight, as you don't want to add baggage to the wrong reservation. The reservation details screen also displays your current seat assignments and any other add-ons you've already purchased.

Practical takeaway: Keep your confirmation number and last name available before opening the app to add baggage. This makes the process faster if you need to manually add your reservation to the app.

Accessing the Baggage Management Section

After opening your reservation, you'll need to find the baggage management section within your trip details. Look for an option labeled "Bags," "Checked Bags," or "Add Baggage." This option usually appears as a button or link on your reservation details screen. The exact placement may vary depending on which version of the app you're using and whether you're on iPhone or Android, but it's consistently located near other reservation modification options.

When you tap on the baggage section, the app displays your current baggage allowance. It shows how many free checked bags are included with your ticket and how many bags you've already added to your reservation. This screen also displays any charges that may apply to additional bags beyond your included allowance. For instance, if your ticket includes two free checked bags and you've already added two bags, the app will indicate that a third bag would cost an additional fee.

The baggage management screen typically shows bag details such as the description you've entered for each bag and the order in which they'll be tracked. Southwest uses bag tags to identify your luggage throughout your journey, and the app keeps a record of these tags. You can view this information within the baggage section, which helps you track your bags during travel. The interface is designed to be straightforward, showing clear information about what's included and what costs extra.

Practical takeaway: Spend a moment reviewing your current baggage allowance on this screen before proceeding. This prevents confusion about which bags are free and which ones carry additional charges.

Adding a New Checked Bag to Your Reservation

To add a new checked bag, look for a button or option that says "Add Bag," "Add Checked Bag," or a similar phrase. Tapping this button will open a form where you can enter information about your bag. The app typically asks you to describe your bag so you can identify it easily during travel. You might describe it by color and type, such as "black rolling suitcase" or "blue hard-sided luggage." This description helps you locate your bag when it arrives at baggage claim.

The app may also ask for other details about your bag, such as its size category or weight, depending on Southwest's current system setup. Providing accurate information ensures that Southwest's baggage handlers have the information they need. Once you've entered the bag description, review the pricing information displayed on the screen. The app will indicate whether this bag is included in your free baggage allowance or if it will incur a charge.

After confirming all the bag details, you'll typically see a button to finalize the addition. This might say "Add Bag," "Confirm," or "Complete." Tapping this button applies the checked bag to your reservation. The app will then update your reservation to reflect the new bag. You should see a confirmation message indicating that your bag has been successfully added. Some versions of the app may show a summary screen displaying all of your bags before you confirm the final addition.

Practical takeaway: Write down or take a photo of the descriptions you enter for each bag. This makes identifying your luggage at your destination much quicker and easier.

Timing and Deadlines for Adding Bags

Southwest allows you to add checked baggage at different points in your travel process. You can add bags when you initially book your flight, after booking but before your departure date, or even at the airport before checking in. The timing you choose affects how you'll add your bags and what options are available to you. Understanding these different timeframes helps you plan when to complete this task.

If you're adding bags before your flight departure, the app is your primary tool for making this change. Southwest typically allows bag additions up until a certain time before departure, though exact cutoff times may vary. Checking your reservation details in the app will show you the timeframe available for modifications. If you're close to your departure time and need to add a bag, you can speak with a Southwest representative at the airport, though availability and options may be limited.

Adding bags early—such as when you book your flight or in the days before travel—gives you the most flexibility and allows you to review everything through the app interface. If you wait until the day of travel or at the airport, a representative will assist you, but the process works differently than through the app. The earlier you add your bags, the more time you have to review your choices and make any corrections if needed.

Practical takeaway: Add your checked bags at least one day before travel if possible. This gives you time to confirm everything is correct and avoids any last-minute complications.

Confirming Your Changes and Tracking Your Bags

After successfully adding your checked bag, the app displays a confirmation that shows all of your baggage for this flight. Review this information carefully to make sure everything matches what you intended. The confirmation screen displays the number of bags you've added, your descriptions for each bag, and any fees that applied. You should also see your updated reservation summary, which includes your baggage information along with your flight details.

Save this confirmation within the app or take a screenshot for your records. This information proves that you've added your bags to your reservation, which can be useful if questions arise at the airport. The baggage information will remain in your reservation until your flight is complete. Southwest assigns bag tags to your luggage at the airport when you check in, and you can track these tags through the app during your travel.

To track your bags during travel, return to your reservation in the "My Trips" section and look for baggage tracking information. Once you've checked your bags at the airport, the app will update with your bag tag numbers. You can use these numbers to monitor your bags' location as they move through the
