Who May Obtain a Tennessee Gold Star License

The Tennessee Gold Star License plate is available to specific categories of individuals based on their military connection. The primary recipients are Gold Star families—those who have lost a family member who was serving in the U.S. Armed Forces at the time of death or who died from a service-connected disability after leaving military service. Gold Star status typically applies to spouses, parents, and in some cases, siblings of the deceased service member.

To be considered a Gold Star family member in Tennessee, the deceased service member must meet certain federal criteria established by the U.S. Department of Defense. Specifically, the service member must have been killed in action, died in a combat zone, or died from a service-connected disability. The service member's military branch does not matter—the program recognizes service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

Family relationship matters when determining who can obtain this plate. Generally, the program recognizes immediate family members, including spouses and parents of the deceased service member. Some states extend eligibility to other family members, though the specific family relationships recognized may vary. Tennessee's program requires documentation of the family relationship and the service member's military status.

Different states have different rules for their Gold Star programs, so Tennessee's specific requirements may differ from neighboring states. Tennessee residents should be aware that having a Gold Star connection in one state does not automatically mean you can obtain a Tennessee Gold Star plate—you must meet Tennessee's specific criteria. This is why understanding the exact requirements is important before seeking more detailed information about how to proceed.

Documentation plays a crucial role in verifying eligibility. Those seeking a Gold Star plate must typically provide military records, death certificates, and proof of family relationship. These documents establish that a service member meets the federal definition of a Gold Star casualty. Having these documents organized before moving forward can streamline the information-gathering process.

Practical Takeaway: The Tennessee Gold Star License is intended for Gold Star families—those who lost a service member through military service or service-connected causes. Understanding the specific family relationships and military circumstances that qualify for this program helps you determine if this plate relates to your situation.

How the Tennessee License Plate System Works

Tennessee's license plate system is managed through the Tennessee Department of Revenue, which oversees vehicle registration and plate issuance for all vehicles registered in the state. When someone registers a vehicle in Tennessee, they must select a plate type. Standard plates are the default option, but Tennessee residents with military service connections or other qualifying criteria may select specialty plates instead, including the Gold Star plate.

The process of obtaining any specialty plate in Tennessee begins with vehicle registration. Whether registering a new vehicle or renewing registration for an existing vehicle, the owner has the opportunity to request a specialty plate. This request is made during the registration process through the Department of Revenue. The registration system requires specific information about the vehicle and the vehicle's owner, along with documentation of any claimed status or category.

Tennessee license plates serve as proof of vehicle registration and must be renewed periodically, typically every 12 months in most cases. When renewing registration, vehicle owners can maintain their specialty plate or switch to a different plate type. The Gold Star plate, like other Tennessee plates, comes with a registration fee. This fee varies depending on the specific plate type, and some specialty plates carry different costs than standard plates.

The physical plate itself is issued once the registration is approved. Plates are mailed to the vehicle owner's address or can be picked up from a local service location. The Gold Star plate displays specific design elements and identifying information. Once received, the plate must be installed on the vehicle in the manner required by Tennessee law, typically on the front and rear of the vehicle.

Documentation requirements are a key part of how the system works. The Department of Revenue must verify that an applicant meets the criteria for any specialty plate before issuing it. This means providing supporting documents during the registration process. Keeping records organized and understanding what documents will be needed makes the process smoother.

Practical Takeaway: Tennessee plates are issued through vehicle registration with the Department of Revenue. The Gold Star plate is one option available during the registration process, and obtaining it involves providing documentation to verify Gold Star family status during registration.

Documentation and Information Needed

Gathering the right documentation before beginning the plate request process is essential. The documents you will need to provide establish your connection to a deceased service member and confirm that service member's military status and circumstances of death. Tennessee's Department of Revenue requires specific documentation to verify Gold Star family status.

The primary document needed is official military documentation that confirms the service member's death and its connection to military service. A DD Form 1300 (Report of Casualty) or similar official military document establishes this connection. This form, issued by the Department of Defense, confirms that a service member died and specifies whether the death was service-connected. Alternatively, a discharge summary or military death certificate may provide this information. These documents can often be obtained from the service member's military branch or through official military records offices.

A death certificate is also necessary documentation. This vital record from the state where death occurred confirms the service member's death and may include limited information about cause of death. Copies of the death certificate can be obtained from the vital records office in the county or state where the person died. Multiple certified copies are often recommended since various agencies may require them.

Proof of family relationship is another key document. This might include a birth certificate establishing parent-child relationship, a marriage certificate establishing spousal relationship, or other vital records showing the family connection. Some agencies may request multiple documents to establish relationship in circumstances where family names have changed through marriage or other means.

Identification and vehicle documentation are also necessary. A valid Tennessee driver's license or other state-issued ID and the vehicle's registration or title are standard requirements for any vehicle registration transaction. These documents verify the identity of the person requesting the plate and establish ownership of the vehicle.

Understanding where to obtain these documents helps in preparation. Military records come from specific branches or through centralized military records repositories. Vital records come from state and local government offices. Keeping a checklist of needed documents can prevent delays.
