Understanding Planet Fitness Location Transfers

Planet Fitness operates over 2,400 locations across the United States, making it one of the largest gym chains in the country. A location transfer allows members to change their primary gym location while keeping their existing membership plan. This process differs from canceling and restarting—you maintain your current rate, membership tier, and any features already included in your plan.

The transfer process itself is straightforward but has specific procedures that vary slightly depending on whether you initiated your membership online or in person at a physical location. Understanding how transfers work helps you make an informed decision about whether this option suits your needs. Planet Fitness allows members to transfer locations for various reasons: relocation to a new city, changing work locations, finding a gym closer to home, or simply wanting access to different equipment or facilities.

A free informational guide about location transfers typically explains the mechanics of how this feature works within Planet Fitness's membership system. The guide outlines the different scenarios where transfers may be appropriate and what information you'll need before contacting the gym. It also describes what happens to your membership during and after a transfer, including any timing considerations.

Many members don't realize they have options for moving their membership rather than terminating it. Some worry that transferring will change their monthly rate or cause them to lose accumulated benefits. A resource explaining transfers provides clarity on these concerns and walks through realistic examples of how the transfer process typically unfolds. This knowledge helps members make decisions that align with their fitness goals and circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting a transfer, understand that this feature exists as an alternative to cancellation, and that your basic membership information typically transfers with you—though you should confirm current details specific to your account before proceeding.

How to Initiate a Location Transfer

The standard method for requesting a location transfer involves contacting the gym location where your membership is currently registered. Most Planet Fitness locations have staff at the front desk who handle membership changes, including transfers. You can visit in person during business hours or call your current location directly. When you contact them, have your membership number ready—this appears on your membership card or in your account information if you manage your membership online.

If you joined through Planet Fitness's website or mobile app, you may also have options to manage your account through these digital channels. The online account portal sometimes allows members to view their membership details and may provide information about contacting your location. However, transfers often require direct communication with a gym representative who can process the change in their system and ensure it's properly recorded.

When you reach out, clearly state which location you want to transfer to. Have the address or name of the new location ready. If you're relocating to an area you're unfamiliar with, you might look up the specific Planet Fitness location address beforehand so you can provide complete information. This prevents back-and-forth communication and speeds up the process.

Documentation you might need includes your membership card, the phone number associated with your account, or your email address. Some locations may ask for identification to verify that you are the account holder. If your membership has any special notes—such as a frozen account, a promotional rate, or other arrangements—mention this when you request the transfer so the staff can note it properly.

Timing matters when you request a transfer. Many gyms process transfers on a calendar cycle, meaning a transfer requested mid-month may take effect at the start of the next billing period. Understanding when your billing cycle occurs helps you know when to expect your transfer to be finalized. Ask the staff member handling your request to confirm the effective date of your transfer.

Practical Takeaway: Contact your current gym location's front desk directly with your membership number and the name or address of your new location. Confirm the effective date of the transfer before ending the conversation.

What Information You'll Need Ready

Having the right information prepared before contacting Planet Fitness about a transfer makes the process more efficient. Your membership number is the most important piece of information—this unique identifier connects you to your account and all associated details. You'll find this on your physical membership card. If you don't have the card available, you can usually locate the number in your online account if you've set up a digital profile.

The phone number or email address registered to your account is another key detail. This helps gym staff locate your membership record if they need to verify your identity. Some locations may ask security questions related to your account before processing changes, particularly if you're requesting changes by phone rather than in person.

Information about your target location is also useful. While simply stating "I want to transfer to the Planet Fitness in [City Name]" often works, having the specific location's address or a nearby cross street can prevent confusion if a city has multiple locations. Planet Fitness's location finder tool on their website lets you search by city or ZIP code, showing you all gyms in a given area.

Your billing information should be accessible as well. Most staff won't need changes to payment details during a transfer—your payment method stays the same—but being prepared to discuss your billing cycle helps clarify when the transfer takes effect. If your membership includes any special arrangements, such as a promotional monthly rate, corporate discount, or frozen account status, have these details noted so you can mention them.

If you're transferring because of relocation, you might mention your move date, though the gym's actual transfer date may not exactly match your moving date due to billing cycles. Understanding this distinction prevents confusion about when you can start using your new location's facilities.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your membership number, registered phone number or email, target location address, and any notes about special membership arrangements before contacting the gym.

Timeline and Processing Details

Planet Fitness location transfers typically don't happen instantaneously. Most transfers process at the start of your next billing cycle, meaning the effective date aligns with when your monthly membership fee is charged. If your billing date is the 15th of each month and you request a transfer on the 20th, the transfer may take effect on the 15th of the following month. This timing ensures that billing, location access, and account records align properly.

Some locations may process transfers more quickly, particularly if you're transferring between locations in the same region or if there are no complications with your account. However, you shouldn't assume instant processing. When you request your transfer, ask the staff member to state the specific date when your transfer will be active. This gives you a clear expectation and prevents confusion if you arrive at your new location before the transfer has finalized.

During the processing period—between when you request the transfer and when it officially takes effect—your membership typically remains active at your original location. You can continue using your current gym through this period. Once the transfer processes, your account updates to reflect the new location, and you'll access your membership through that facility instead.

In rare cases, complications can delay a transfer. If your account has outstanding fees, holds, or other issues, the gym may flag these before completing the transfer. This is another reason to ask about the effective date and any potential obstacles when you make your request. If complications exist, the staff can explain them and help you resolve them before the transfer takes effect.

If you need to transfer more urgently due to circumstances like an injury that prevents you from traveling to your current location, explain this to the gym. While they may still follow standard processing timelines, some managers have discretion to expedite transfers in specific situations. It never hurts to ask, but don't count on faster processing as a certainty.

Practical Takeaway: Expect your transfer to process at your next billing cycle date, which may be several weeks away. Confirm the exact effective date from staff to plan accordingly.

What Stays the Same During a Transfer

One of the main advantages of transferring rather than canceling and restarting your membership is that your rate typically remains unchanged. If you joined Planet Fitness three years ago at a rate of $10 per month and have been grandfathered into that rate, transferring to a new location should preserve that rate. This is particularly valuable for members with promotional rates or introductory pricing, as Planet Fitness's current rates may be higher than what longer-term members pay.

Your membership tier—whether you have a Black Card membership (which includes access to all locations, tanning, and massage beds) or a regular membership—stays the same during a transfer. If you've been paying for premium features at your current location, those features transfer with you. The specific amenities available at your new location may differ (for example
