How to Request a White House Tour

The White House offers guided tours to visitors from around the world. Tours are free and showcase the history, architecture, and art within this historic building. Understanding how the tour request process works helps you plan a visit that fits your schedule and needs.

Tour requests must be submitted through your U.S. Representative's or Senator's office. Each member of Congress receives a limited number of tour passes each month to distribute to constituents. This system means you'll work with your elected representative's staff to coordinate your visit. You can find your Representative by visiting House.gov or your Senator through Senate.gov. Contact their local or Washington office directly—most have dedicated staff who handle tour requests.

Tours typically occur Tuesday through Thursday, with morning sessions starting between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The tour length varies but usually lasts about one to two hours. No reservations are guaranteed, as tour availability depends on the official schedule, security requirements, and special events at the White House. Lead times for tour requests generally range from several weeks to months in advance.

When contacting your Representative's or Senator's office about a tour, provide your preferred dates, the size of your group (up to 10 people typically), and your contact information. The office will work with White House staff to find suitable dates. If your requested dates aren't available, staff may suggest alternatives. Be prepared that some requests may not be fulfilled due to high demand.

Practical Takeaway: Start your tour planning by identifying your U.S. Representative or Senators and contacting their offices several months before your intended visit date. This advance notice increases the likelihood of securing a tour time that works for your schedule.

What to Expect During Your White House Tour

Knowing what happens during a White House tour helps you prepare mentally and physically for your visit. The tour is a guided walk through select rooms of the residence, narrated by trained White House staff who share historical information, architectural details, and stories about past Presidents and their families.

The tour typically includes visits to the following areas: the East Room, the Green Room, the Blue Room, the Red Room, the State Dining Room, and the Grand Foyer. Each room has distinctive décor, furniture, and artwork representing different historical periods and design styles. Tour guides explain the purposes of these rooms, how they're used for official functions, and notable events that have occurred within their walls. You'll learn about the restoration efforts, historical renovations, and the stories behind the artwork and furnishings.

Physical requirements matter for this tour. The walk involves navigating multiple flights of stairs, long hallways, and standing for extended periods. Comfortable, sturdy shoes are essential. The building has security checkpoints similar to airport screening, so plan for additional time. Bags are screened, and certain items are not permitted inside, including cameras with detachable lenses, large purses, and sharp objects. A clear bag policy may be in effect. You'll need a valid government-issued photo ID to enter.

The tour moves at a steady pace set by the guide. You won't have unlimited time to linger in each room, so if you want to observe details closely, arrive with an awareness that the experience is curated and time-limited. Photography is permitted in most areas, but flash photography is prohibited. The temperature inside is climate-controlled, but the building can be cold or warm depending on the season.

Practical Takeaway: Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a valid photo ID, check the list of prohibited items beforehand, and arrive early to account for security screening. These simple preparations make the tour experience more enjoyable and stress-free.

Security Requirements and What to Bring

Security is a critical part of visiting the White House. Understanding the requirements ahead of time prevents delays and disappointment at the gate. All visitors must pass through security screening, similar to airport procedures, before entering the building.

Required documents include a valid government-issued photo ID for every person in your group, regardless of age. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, passport, passport card, military ID, or state ID. Without proper identification, you will not be permitted to enter. Children must have appropriate identification as well. If you're unsure about a specific document, contact your Representative's office in advance.

Prohibited items include the following: cameras with interchangeable or detachable lenses, video cameras, tripods, backpacks, large purses, knives or sharp objects, firearms, explosives, and hazardous materials. A clear bag policy may allow certain transparent bags. The specifics can change, so check with your Representative's office or the White House website closer to your tour date for the most current restrictions. Bags are X-rayed during screening, and visitors go through metal detectors.

Items you may bring include a small camera with a fixed lens, a small crossbody bag or purse, personal medications, a light jacket or sweater, and eyeglasses. Many visitors find it helpful to wear layers since the building's temperature varies by location. Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement through security checkpoints is practical. Plan to arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes early to account for the security process.

Visitors with mobility concerns or disabilities may request accommodations. Contact your Representative's office to discuss specific needs. White House staff work to provide reasonable accommodations where possible, though some areas of the building have architectural limitations.

Practical Takeaway: Prepare a checklist of allowed and prohibited items, ensure you have valid ID for each person, and leave extra time for security screening. This preparation removes confusion and allows your group to move smoothly through the entrance process.

Seasonal Considerations and Tour Availability

White House tour availability changes throughout the year based on official functions, holidays, and weather. Understanding these seasonal patterns helps you plan your visit more strategically. Tours are typically available year-round, but some periods have higher availability than others.

Spring and fall generally offer moderate tour availability with pleasant weather in Washington, D.C. The cherry blossoms in spring (late March through April) draw large crowds, which may reduce tour slots. Summer (June through August) sees high visitor demand, and tour availability may be limited. Winter months, particularly December and January, have fewer tourists but the building hosts holiday events and New Year celebrations that may restrict public access. Many people schedule tours during shoulder seasons—late April through May or September through October—when the weather is nice and tour availability is reasonable.

The White House closes for major holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, Independence Day, and other federal holidays. Tours may also be suspended during official state visits or major national events. The President's schedule directly affects tour availability; days when the President is traveling or hosting large events inside the residence may have no public tours scheduled. This unpredictability means booking far in advance remains important regardless of season.

Weather impacts tours differently by season. Summer heat and humidity can make the outdoor walk to the White House entrance uncomfortable, though the interior is air-conditioned. Winter rain and occasional snow can create slippery conditions around the building's exterior. Spring and fall provide the most comfortable walking conditions. If weather is severe, tours may be cancelled for visitor safety.

Holiday decorations inside the White House vary seasonally. The building is decorated extensively during the winter holiday season (November through December), which some visitors find particularly appealing. However, holiday-season crowds and reduced tour availability offset this advantage. Summer tours offer different perspectives as the building's gardens and exterior spaces are fully in bloom.

Practical Takeaway: Plan your White House tour request for shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall) to balance pleasant weather with reasonable tour availability. Understand that tour dates aren't guaranteed and flexibility with scheduling increases the chances of getting a time slot.

Special Events and Public Access Beyond Standard Tours

Beyond regular guided tours, the White House hosts special events that offer different opportunities to experience this historic property. Learning about these events expands your options for visiting this national landmark. Some events are ticketed and highly competitive, while others are invitation-only or available to specific groups.
