Free Guide to Updating Your Location on Google Maps

Understanding Google Maps Business Profiles and Location Updates

Google Maps serves as one of the most widely used navigation and business discovery platforms in the world, with over 1 billion monthly active users. When people search for a business, restaurant, store, or service in their area, Google Maps often appears as the first result. Having accurate location information on Google Maps matters significantly because customers rely on this data to find you, check your hours, read reviews, and contact you directly.

A Google Maps Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business) is a free listing that displays your business name, address, phone number, website, photos, hours of operation, and customer reviews. This profile appears in Google Search results and on Google Maps itself. Whether you own a brick-and-mortar store, run a service-based business, or manage a nonprofit organization, maintaining an accurate location on Google Maps helps potential customers discover you.

Location information becomes especially critical when businesses move to new addresses, expand to multiple locations, or close physical locations. Outdated location data can result in customers traveling to the wrong address, calling disconnected phone numbers, or visiting during hours when you're actually closed. Studies show that 76% of people who search for a local business on their phone visit that business within 24 hours, making accurate Maps information directly connected to foot traffic and sales.

Several types of businesses benefit from updating their Google Maps location:

• Retail stores relocating to new storefronts
• Service providers who move their office or headquarters
• Restaurants opening additional locations
• Medical offices, dental practices, and healthcare facilities
• Nonprofits and community organizations changing addresses
• Home-based businesses operating in new areas

Practical Takeaway: Before making any changes to your location on Google Maps, write down your current address as it appears on your profile, your new address, and any changes to phone numbers or hours. This information will guide your update process and help you verify that changes took effect properly.

Accessing Your Google Maps Business Profile

To update your location on Google Maps, you first need to access your Google Maps Business Profile. This process begins by visiting Google Business Profile, which you can find by searching "Google Business Profile" in any web browser. The official website is located at business.google.com.

You will need a Google account to sign in to your Business Profile. If you already have a Gmail address, YouTube channel, or use other Google services, you already have a Google account. If not, you can create one for free by visiting accounts.google.com. When creating a new Google account, you'll need an email address (which can be personal or business email) and a password. Google will ask you to verify your identity, often through a phone number or recovery email address.

Once you're signed into your Google account, navigate to business.google.com and click the "Sign in" button. You'll see your Business Profile if you have one already set up. If you see a message saying "You don't have a Business Profile yet," this means either no profile exists for your business, or you're not listed as a manager or owner of an existing profile.

If you manage multiple locations for the same business, Google Business Profile will display them in a list. You can click on the specific location you want to update. This is particularly important for larger businesses with multiple storefronts, franchises, or service areas. Each location has its own separate profile with its own address, phone number, and reviews.

If you cannot find your existing Business Profile, this sometimes happens when:

• Your business was listed under a different name than you currently use
• Someone else created and manages the profile
• Your profile was removed due to inactivity or policy violations
• Your business is extremely new and hasn't been indexed by Google yet

Practical Takeaway: Sign into your Google account and visit business.google.com right now to locate your existing Business Profile. Write down the email address associated with your account and any usernames you use, as you may need this information later if you want to grant other team members access to make updates.

Step-by-Step Process for Updating Your Business Address

Once you've signed into your Google Business Profile and located your business, updating your address follows a straightforward process. On your Business Profile dashboard, look for the "Info" or "Location" section. In this section, you'll see your currently listed address displayed prominently. To change it, click on the address field or look for an "Edit" button nearby.

When you click to edit your address, a text box will appear where you can modify the street address, city, state, and zip code. Google Maps will offer suggestions as you type, drawn from its database of known addresses. These suggestions can help prevent typos and ensure Google recognizes your new location correctly. If your new address matches one of Google's suggestions, select it from the dropdown menu. If your exact address doesn't appear in suggestions, you can still type it manually.

The address format matters for accuracy. Use this standard format for best results:

• Street number and name (example: 123 Main Street)
• Suite, unit, or floor number if applicable (example: Suite 200)
• City name
• State abbreviation
• Five-digit zip code

Do not include your business name in the address field itself—Google has a separate section for business name. Using the correct format helps Google's systems match your address to the right location and prevents confusion with similarly named streets or addresses in different cities.

After entering your new address, you may also need to verify it. Google offers several verification methods, including postcard verification (Google mails a postcard with a verification code to your business address), phone verification, email verification, or instant verification if your business is already well-established in Google's database. The verification method available to you depends on your business type and location history. Once verified, your new address becomes live on Google Maps and in Google Search results.

If you're moving to a new location within the same city or nearby area, the update usually processes within a few days. If you're relocating to a different state or country, the update process may take longer as Google's systems need to re-verify your business in the new location.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your computer or phone ready with your new address information formatted correctly before you begin editing. Having this written down prevents errors during the update process and speeds up completion.

Handling Multiple Locations and Service Areas

Businesses with multiple physical locations face unique challenges when updating information on Google Maps. If your company operates from several storefronts, offices, or service centers, each location needs its own separate Business Profile. Google's system is designed to handle this through a parent organization structure, but each individual location must be managed separately.

If you manage a business with multiple locations and want to update information at just one location, make sure you're editing the correct profile before saving changes. In your Google Business Profile dashboard, you'll see a location selector (usually at the top of the screen) showing which location you're currently viewing. Always verify you're editing the right location before changing address, phone number, or other details.

For service-based businesses that don't have a physical storefront but serve customers in different areas (such as plumbers, electricians, cleaning services, or landscaping companies), Google Maps operates differently. These businesses can set a "service area" rather than pinpointing a single street address. This service area approach tells customers in certain regions that you serve their area without displaying your exact office address (which may be in a warehouse or home office).

When updating a service area location, you would:

• Enter your business address as your actual office location (this doesn't need to be visible to customers)
• Enable the "Service area" option in your profile settings
• Select the cities, zip codes, or radius around your office where you provide services
• Save these service area settings

This approach means your business won't appear when someone searches Google Maps for your service in an area outside your service zone, but will appear prominently when someone in your service area searches
