Free Guide to Paying Fresno Traffic Tickets

Understanding Fresno Traffic Tickets and Your Options

A traffic ticket in Fresno is a citation issued by law enforcement for violating traffic laws. When you receive a ticket, you have several paths forward, and understanding each one helps you make informed decisions. The ticket itself contains important information: the violation code, the fine amount, the court where your case would be handled, and the deadline to respond.

Fresno traffic violations fall into different categories. Moving violations include speeding, running a red light, unsafe lane changes, or failing to stop at a stop sign. Non-moving violations involve equipment issues like a broken taillight or expired registration. Some violations are considered "correctable" offenses, meaning you can fix the problem and potentially reduce or dismiss the fine. For example, an expired registration violation can sometimes be resolved by updating your vehicle registration and showing proof to the court.

When you receive a ticket, you typically have about 30 days to respond. Your main options include: paying the fine in full, contesting the ticket in traffic court, requesting traffic school, or negotiating with the prosecution. Each option has different costs, time commitments, and potential outcomes. Understanding what each involves before you act helps you choose the path that works best for your situation.

The Fresno County Superior Court handles traffic matters. Tickets are processed through the Traffic Division, and court locations vary depending on where the violation occurred. If the violation happened in Fresno city, your case goes to the Fresno courthouse. If it happened in an unincorporated area, it may go to a different location.

Practical Takeaway: Before taking action, read your ticket carefully and note the response deadline. Visit the Fresno County Superior Court website or call their traffic division at (559) 488-3409 to confirm the correct procedures and deadlines for your specific violation.

How to Pay Your Fresno Traffic Ticket

Paying your ticket directly is the most straightforward option. When you pay, you are typically admitting guilt to the violation and accepting the fine amount listed on your citation. This means a conviction will appear on your driving record. However, paying promptly is often the quickest way to resolve the matter without court appearances.

Fresno offers multiple payment methods for your convenience. You can pay online through the Fresno County Superior Court's website using a credit or debit card. Online payment is available 24/7 and provides immediate confirmation. You can also pay by phone by calling the traffic division during business hours. Payment by mail is an option—you send a check or money order with your ticket to the court address listed on the citation. In-person payments can be made at the courthouse during regular business hours, typically Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

When paying, have your ticket number and driver's license number ready. If paying by check or money order, write your ticket number on the payment. Include your full name and date of birth so the court can properly credit your account. Keep proof of payment for your records, whether that is a confirmation number from online payment, a receipt from in-person payment, or a copy of your mailed payment envelope with tracking information.

Payment amounts vary based on the violation. A speeding ticket might range from $238 to over $500 depending on how far above the speed limit you were traveling. Other violations have different base fines set by California law, though local court fees and assessments are added to the total. The exact amount is shown on your citation. Some jurisdictions offer payment plans if the full amount is difficult to pay at once—contact the court directly to inquire about this option.

Practical Takeaway: If you decide to pay, do so before your response deadline to avoid additional penalties. Online payment through the Fresno County website is usually the fastest method. Keep your confirmation number or receipt as proof that you paid.

Contesting Your Ticket in Traffic Court

If you believe the ticket was issued in error or you have a legal defense, you can request a court date to contest it. This process is called a trial or hearing. You present your side of what happened, the officer presents theirs, and a judge decides if the violation occurred. Contesting a ticket requires more time and effort than paying, but it may result in dismissal or reduction of the fine if your defense is strong.

To contest your ticket, you must request a trial in writing before your deadline expires. Send a letter to the Fresno County Superior Court Traffic Division stating that you wish to contest the violation. Include your name, ticket number, and request for a court date. Mail this to the address on your ticket or submit it online if that option is available through the court website. Some courts allow you to request a trial by phone as well. After you request a trial, the court will mail you a date and time for your hearing.

Before your court date, gather evidence supporting your position. This might include photographs of the accident scene, witness contact information, maintenance records showing your vehicle was in proper condition, or documentation of road or weather conditions at the time. Bring any documents related to your ticket. Write down the main points of your defense so you remember them when speaking to the judge. You are allowed to represent yourself in traffic court without an attorney, though some people choose to hire a traffic attorney to help with their case.

At the hearing, the officer who issued the ticket will typically testify about what they observed. You will have the opportunity to question the officer and present your own testimony and evidence. Traffic court judges hear hundreds of cases, so being organized and respectful makes a better impression. Explain your facts clearly without arguing or becoming emotional. After hearing from both sides, the judge will decide whether you committed the violation as charged.

Practical Takeaway: Request your trial in writing with plenty of time before the deadline. Gather all evidence that supports your defense, and practice explaining your side of the story clearly and calmly before your court date.

Traffic School as an Option for Point Reduction

Traffic school, also called a traffic violator course, is an educational program you can attend to possibly have points removed from your driving record or have a fine reduced. It does not erase the violation from your record, but it prevents the conviction from adding points to your California driving record. Since insurance companies often use driving record points to set rates, traffic school may help keep your insurance premiums from increasing.

Not all tickets are eligible for traffic school. In California, you must have a relatively clean driving record and the violation cannot be a serious one like reckless driving or driving under the influence. Most speeding tickets, improper turn violations, and similar infractions may be eligible. The ticket itself or the court notice will state whether traffic school is an option for your violation. If it is available, the court can tell you about approved traffic schools in the Fresno area.

The cost of traffic school typically ranges from $20 to $75, which you pay to the traffic school, not to the court. This is separate from any fine you owe. You must complete the course within a set timeframe, usually 30 to 90 days after your ticket. Most schools now offer online courses that you can take from home at your own pace. You watch videos, read materials, and take a final test. Some traditional in-person classes are still available if you prefer that format.

If you complete traffic school and submit proof to the court before your deadline, the court typically dismisses the citation and no points are added to your license. However, the violation remains on your record—insurance companies and law enforcement can still see it occurred. You just do not receive the point count that would normally apply. To explore this option, ask the court at the time you receive your ticket whether traffic school is available for your specific violation, and obtain a list of approved schools in Fresno County.

Practical Takeaway: If traffic school is available for your ticket, compare the cost and time required against potential insurance rate increases. Online courses make it easy to complete from home, and you typically need to submit your completion certificate to the court within the specified deadline.

Working with the Prosecution or Requesting Reduced Charges

Another path is negotiating with the prosecution to reduce the fine, have the charge reduced to a lesser violation, or have certain conditions met for dismissal. This approach is often called "plea bargaining" in criminal cases, though traffic matters use similar concepts. Negotiation is common in traffic court and may result in an outcome better than simply paying the full fine or contesting the ticket and losing.
