Shelters in Phoenix operate with different structures and purposes. Some provide emergency overnight shelter only, meaning people can stay for one night and must leave by morning. Others offer extended stays ranging from a few weeks to several months. A few shelters focus on specific populations, such as families with children, veterans, or young adults aging out of foster care.
Most Phoenix shelters operate on a first-come, first-served basis or through intake processes during specific hours. Many accept walk-ins during afternoon or evening hours. Some shelters require advance contact by phone, while others accept same-day requests. The intake process typically involves staff asking basic questions about your situation, conducting a brief health screening, and explaining shelter rules.
Phoenix shelters generally provide beds in dormitory-style rooms or private rooms depending on the facility. They typically offer at least one meal per day, though some provide multiple meals. Many shelters provide access to showers, laundry facilities, and storage for personal belongings. Some facilities have additional programs like job training, mental health counseling, or substance abuse treatment services on-site or through partnerships.
Shelter staff members are trained to work with people in crisis situations. They understand that homelessness results from many different circumstances—job loss, medical emergencies, family situations, mental health challenges, or domestic violence. Staff approach residents with respect and work to create safe environments.
Practical Takeaway: Shelters vary significantly in what they offer and how they operate. Learning about specific shelters in your area before you need them allows you to understand your options and know where to go if a crisis occurs.

This center operates daily and serves as a central point for understanding what resources exist.
Several faith-based organizations operate shelters throughout Phoenix. These include Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army, and various churches and religious organizations. Many accept people regardless of religious belief. These shelters often combine emergency shelter with longer-term supportive housing programs.

Youth-focused shelters serve people under age 18 and young adults. Covenant House Arizona serves youth and young adults up to age 21, providing emergency shelter, meals, and services specific to young people's needs.
Practical Takeaway: Write down the names and phone numbers of 3-4 shelters that might match your situation and keep this information in a safe place you can access easily. Different shelters serve different populations, so knowing your options means faster response if you need shelter.
How to Contact Shelters and What Information to Have Ready
Contacting a shelter typically involves calling during business hours or arriving in person during intake hours. Having certain information organized beforehand makes the process smoother and helps shelter staff understand your needs quickly.

Most Phoenix shelters prefer phone calls during daytime or early evening hours. When calling, have ready: your name, your current situation (where you're staying tonight, for example), any dependents with you (children, partners, or others), and any urgent medical or safety concerns. You don't need to share extensive personal history—shelter staff are trained to ask follow-up questions.
If you're calling on behalf of someone else, shelter staff will ask to speak with that person when possible. They do this for safety and privacy reasons. If you cannot reach the person directly, explain the situation and ask how staff can help.
Having the following information ready before calling helps conversation go more smoothly: the number of people needing shelter, ages of any children, whether you have pets, whether you have a vehicle, any immediate health concerns, and whether you've accessed shelter services before in Phoenix.
Some shelters accept evening walk-ins without advance notice. If you arrive in person, go during posted intake hours (often between 4 and 8 PM). Bring identification if you have it, though lack of ID won't prevent you from accessing emergency shelter. Bring any medications you take regularly and medical documents if available.
If you're having trouble reaching a specific shelter, the Homeless Services Center or local 211 services (described in the next section) can provide current phone numbers and information. Shelter contact information changes occasionally, and these resources stay updated.
Weather events matter significantly in Phoenix. During extreme heat (over 110 degrees) or rare cold weather events, some shelters expand capacity or extend hours. If you need shelter during weather emergencies, call early to confirm current operations.
Practical Takeaway: Keep a written list of shelter phone numbers and what each shelter focuses on. Store this in your phone contacts or write it on a card you keep with you. When stress is high, having pre-made lists reduces confusion and helps you act quickly.
